My 69' 6hp is on it's second set of points, I can't remember the year of one of the others (about the same), but it still has the originals in it.

One nice thing about the old point magneto ignition was most of the time it was just wear on the cam follower and wear and tear on the contact surfaces. Easy to adjust and replace.
I will admit I do like the breakerless systems as they should be maintenance free, and the timing should never need adjustment. But when the electronics go wonky it can get very expensive in a hurry, and while the CD systems can produce very high voltage, the spark is often thin

But if you can not do the work yourself ?------Shop labour costs on a universal magneto overhaul will make the CD ignition models a lot cheaper to maintain !!

well I think anybody can do points coils condensers... I had BIG 0 knowledge and IBOATS , AOMCI, books ( Cheap Outbards by Wawrzniak) did it for me after an office buddy gave his dad's disfunctionnal QD ... in which I found ...cracked coils... the rest his history but I have not work on the innards yet....

the question I think (JMHO) is ....does someone want to learn and be coached... a born again QD FD JW is great !

How do they compare to the shop labour costs of repairing breakerless ignition systems?

In most cases the CD / powerpack unit is the fault.---2 screws and 2 plug ins and you are good to go.

Yeah, but that's the rub. The CD unit is an $80 DIY gamble, unless you fully trust your testing abilities.

Now on TV vacuum tubes, you went to the corner store and plugged your tubes into the machine and replaced them if the needle stayed in the red zone. Think I miss that.

(But hey -- I'm getting the hang of OBDII testing on my 20 yr old pickup.... Change is good.)

Anybody can get a $20 VOM and test a cdi box, the CD ignition is a plug and play system so much easier. Saying points are easier is not true a lot more labor involved.

I would rather have an electronic ignition on mine, but I can't say the points have been a problem.

just to be clear. I agree points are trickier than a swap job on CD module but the hobby of oldies is more a fixing than swapping occupation ...where else can you spend a couple hours to keep one busy and away from house chores and.. "the list". :washing:
In the South you need to get out and fish ... up here in the North :canada: :smow: greasing your fingers :cheerful: waiting for the big thaw is not a bad thing.

I do not disagree with any of that. I just don't think your choice of motor should be limited to an ignition. The OP asked a question because he was told not to buy a certain ignition. I answered his question pretty fairly and now it has turned into a magneto versus CDi. I am just saying do not limit your motor choice to the type of ignition all motors are fun.
