Re: advice on water pump change

hello
that design has worked well for many years. since sometime in the eary to mid sixties. most manufactures just use an oring merc used an oring and a gasket.
blue goo has its uses I guess but I really dont see much for it on outboards
I see to many parts ruined due to improper sealants
but overall seems ya did good
time will tell. keep an eye on the oil

Thanks! I'll be sure and check the lower unit oil after every use... especially early on. I didn't realize that most manufacturers sealed with the o-ring alone. If that's the case then I'd say merc's design is just fine!

Re: advice on water pump change

Last night I started it up to test the pump... It worked great. I ran it for over 10 minutes and no leak into the lower unit (or out). I think I have this one solved...

I did, however, develop another possible problem along the way. I put the motor into forward and reverse to make certain everything was assembled correctly. Reverse was fine but when I put it into forward it made a "grinding" noise for a split second when it first went into gear. This noise was very subtle and most people would probably disregard it but I know for certain it was not there before.

The only thing I can come up with is that the boat is idling higher than it was before. I did a seafoam treatment on it before I removed the lower unit and it now idles and runs better than ever. I'm wondering if idling higher would cause this problem???

I didn't change gears or anything while the LU was removed so I don't see how the shift rod could affect this. I don't have time right now or I'd video the sound as I placed it into gear. If you guys think that would help to diagnose the problem I'll try to do that next week. I'm about to go home for Thanksgiving so I'll be away from the boat for a few days.

One more thing. I believe I installed the plastic installation guide that goes around the shift shaft upside down. I didn't realize this until I began looking at diagrams after I noticed the noise. When I first removed the lower unit it fell out so I didn't know which way went up when I reinstalled... I still don't think this is contributing to the noise I'm hearing.

Thanks!

Brent

All outboards "Crunch" if you engage the gears slowly due to the type of Dog clutch they use. You need to "Snap" it into gear quickly to minimise this.
Also, it may behave different under
load (in water) rather than on the muffs. My 1980 Merc idles at about 1000 rpm on muffs but lower RPM when lowered into the bay.

yep
what unicorn says.
they will chatter a lot if ya move the shifter slow. and its more noticable on the muffs. the plastic piece is rour reverse lock cam. if you have power trim its not really nessasary if ya dont you will find the motor will climb out of the water when backing down.

Re: advice on water pump change

So there's really nothing I could have done that would cause the noise to start? I remember well that before I changed the water pump it was totally silent when I put it into gear... even on the muffs. I'll be back "home" in a couple of days and I'll record the sound with digital camcorder. I just want to be sure that it's "normal." :)

Thanks!

Brent
