Advice Please-Suprising Results with my new Cyclone Prop

I have a 19 ft bay boat with a E-tec 150 H.O. It is new and I am trying my 2nd prop. The first was a Bass Renegade 13.5 x 23. I was only turning 4800 rpm at WOT. I traded it in for a Cyclone 14 1/8 x 19. Given the rule of thumb that 2 inches of pitch gives around 400 rpm, I thought this would give me around 5600 rpm. Yesterday, I went out and could only turn 5000 rpm. I know the blade diameter is larger, but I didn't think it would make a 600 rpm difference. Why did this only slightly increase RPM? I played with the trim and jackplate to gain RPM but 5000 was Max. If I need to re-prop (again) what prop and pitch would you recommend? The Cyclone only goes down to 17" and proportianally goes up in diameter to 14 1/4. I don't think this would give me the difference I need to get close to my 5750 rpm limit. I will be giving my prop guy a call tomorrow to discuss, but I welcome and appreciate any of your opinions. Also, my prop guy likes the BRP brands and seems to downplay the brands such as Stiletto, Michigan Wheel, and other less expensive alternatives. To me, it seems that if a prop works, gives you the performance you want, and doesn't vibrate or fly apart, it should be ok. Can someone explain what makes a "quality" prop better than a cheaper one?

Thanks!

The rule only applies when youre comparing the same brand & style props. What bay boat do you have?

Ask your prop guy if he thinks BRP makes all their own props. Don't let him put prop blinders on you. PPI (Stiletto & Turbo) make some great props. And THEY do make their own. And props for others that I bet your prop guru would be shocked at.

Thanks for the response. I have a Bluewave 190 deluxe (18' 9", 1100lbs dry).
The prop I had first was a Renegade Bass, and the one I have now is a Cyclone. Both 4 blades, the Cyclone used to be called a Renegade Offshore. I think the rake is different, but they are very similar. My prop guy is DAH custom propellers and they have a very good reputation. Their customized props rated among the best in the Bass and Walleye Magazine prop shootout. But I am not posting this thread to question their credibility. I just would like educated, unbiased opinions on what will work on my boat. I have seen from your posts, that you seem to be very knowledgeable, so your input is appreciated.
I was looking and the Michigan Props Apollo XHS in 14.65 x 16. Or the Stiletto Pro Bay III 14.25 x 15 or 17 pitch. Do you think either of these are good options? Thanks again.

It's very understandable that DAH is pro-OMC & BRP. Don used to be the head prop engineer at OMC. A lot of the prop designs were his whether OMC made them or not. But that doesn't mean Stiletto and Turbo don't make good props. We've had very good luck with the Bay Pro III series. A lot of your success will depend on hull design and matching it with the right prop design. What kind of bay boat is it?

Re: Advice Please-Suprising Results with my new Cyclone Prop

I mentioned above that it is a Blue Wave 190 Deluxe. www.bluewaveboats.com will show all the specs. I have sent an email to the Bluewave rep to see if he can ping some of his dealers who use E-tec's on their Bluewaves. I bought my Bluewave from a dealer that only sells Yammie and got my outboard somewhere else that doesn't sell Bluewave. So I can't get any info from my dealer. Since I only got 200 rpm difference with a 4" pitch change, and raising the Jackplate didn't seem to make any difference, I am wondering if the throttle may be not be fully travelling forward. I will go check this when I get home just to make sure. In the meantime, I am strongly considering sthe Stiletto Pro Bay III in 14 1/4 x 15.

Well, just checked...the throttle seems fine. I called BRP and they said there was no settting which should limit the RPM. So I guess I have to keep working with different props.
