Re: Advice re buying Penn Yan Inboard...

goinhungry -- In your post, you said that if it had a blown engine, then you wouldn't be interested it. I know you said that you aren't very mechanically handy with engines, but..I was just thinking.. If you already have a 305 (small block chevy) motor, then why wouldn't you be interested in finding a boat that has a blown V8 engine? You could save a ton of money and it probably wouldn't cost you too much to have a mechanic swap your engine with it.

Anyway, enjoy your search and keep us posted.

an alpha drive is miles behind a borg warner clutch, dang things will go 1000's of hours with very fer problems, nost are seals on the input and output and then only if the bilge stays wet or the seawater pump is leaking.
set that penn yann up with a FWC small block using a full cooling system and cast stainless steel risers and the package is good until you overheat it.
I have one here rigged like that with almost 9000 hours on it and he still goes out.
my self if it dont hang off the back I want no parts of it.
given the choice between a properly set up inboard to a properly set up I/O Ill take the inboard anyday. same basic engine and a seriously less complicated drive, the draw back is shallow water ops. however that penn yann will go almost anywhere a mercruiser will. however volvos and mercs that stick out the back make me a serious amount of cash.
keepem coming :)

Thanks to all for your input. I'm leaning towards the Wellcraft at this point, but I've gotta run up there and have it surveyed. The family likes it too. I'll let you know how it turns out and thanks again - no matter which choice I make down the line I've learned a lot of invaluable information from you guys - I really appreciate it!
