We have 2 almost identical Northwoods pontoons and 2 almost identical merc motors.
Problem is, we want to frankenstein them out so that our nicer pontoon has the nicer(newer) motor.

Same size same brand motor. just six years newer. one is 2000, one is 2006.

2000 - model: 25ELPT4S 172lbs.
2006 - model: F25ELPT 180lbs.

Is this something we can do without involving professionals? I can post any photos if need be.

help me out, experts!

Sounds like a simple swap. If the number of terminals are the same on the wiring harness, then there is no issue. If there is a difference, then you will need an adaptor from a Merc dealer. Swapping the harnesses would NOT be easy. This is more of a Merc question than a pontoon question so you may get a better response if you have a forum moderator move it to the Mercury section for you. Good luck.

Right off hand it should be a very easy swap, the only thing you may run into is what jeep man is saying but if you look at the wiring harness connector you will know. And you should be able to do it your self in any case. Ever thing else should be bolt up.

Ok I must be dense. When you say wiring harness connector, I envision something like the wiring harness on a trailer that you connect for lighting etc. But I don't see anything like that. I see a threaded connector that apparently goes from the motor to the steering/console. and 4 individual wires that go through a rubber face plate on the top side of the engine that then snake through the engine to various connection points inside the engine. So, tomorrow I will take some pictures, and will post to my thread... and I've also reposted to the mercury forum... thank you for your responses.

I had a thought , If you have the controllers for both motors, then your golden, And yes it is the controller wire harness where it plugs into the motor. Those are the wires for the remote control of the motor, and if the plugs match then that's one less item to change.

Things get lost in the merc forum real fast , if you even get a answer.
