Wow... What a thread!!!
Salty, my $. 02 on this one. Don't buy some huge boat in the final chapter of its life and expect to be happy with your decision. How about a 16' or 17' aluminum runabout with an outboard motor?
Remember that the fun in this deal will be had with your family out on the water in whatever boat you have. Boat problems kill boating joy at a rate on 10:1. The Do yourself a favor here and keep it simple. Less is more when incomes to boating on a budget.

dagnabit tinny's keep tryin to edge in...... Stay with him, we're not gonna lose this one..LOL
Hey...good luck on you boatquest this weekend! One thing I learned from looking at boats is to bring your own battery along (if possible?) I know people selling boats should be prepared to start and run a boat, but this time of year you're bound to run into some that need a new battery or might take a while in the cold...just a thought?! (maybe it should be a sign?)
