Afraid I'm gonna bust my transom while towing....

I have a 1993 14? Livingston and a 1989 25hp Evinrude outboard. The trailer is a 1993 Shorelander that came with the boat. I bought the boat about 2 years ago and the motor a year ago ? due to a variety of reasons (meaning, I tried fixing it up myself for a LONG time), I just got them out in the water for the first time this winter.

I?m pretty much learning things as I go along, and local mechanic showed me last month how to raise the motor and ?lock? it in place. I thought this was cool, as I often see boats being trailered with their motors in raised positions, and I figured that this would provide some added security against having my motor banging against rocks or whatever on bumpy roads.

So, this weekend I took the boat to a local lake (with motor raised), hit some railroad tracks and BANG!, the motor slams back down against the transom. (well not quite the transom, but a metal bar on the motor mount that sits about an inch off the transom itself) Dumbly, I pull over, go back to the motor, raise it and continue driving. About 2 minutes away from my house I hit a bump and BANG! The motor drops again. It was about this time that I wondered if I was hurting my boat by raising the motor like this. Go figure?. :-}

I wish I could say that this was the only time this happened, but I did the same thing when I drove the boat home from the lake in February ? I got "only" one BANG! that time.

Today, I was talking to a friend at work who told me about transom savers. I wish I knew about that before?.

In the meantime, I went out and looked over my transom tonight. I did not remove the motor, but I saw no evidence of any scratches, dents or cracks related to my BANGS. I rapped on the transom with my knuckles and tugged on it a few times - it seems real solid. It's not wobbly or anything.

I am very concerned that my bad choices to drive with the unsecured, raised motor may have caused some damage to the transom. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go about determining if I screwed anything up? Any other tips?

As for the future, am I right in guessing that a transom saver should be on my shopping list? Another guy at work suggested that I secure the motor tight against the transom in the ?down? position ? just to eliminate the rattling and bumping on the road.

Thanks for your help,

MIT

you can get a motor defloperizer if you want to.....if your skeg is not terribly close to the road in the down position you can tow with it down....... the engine dropping on the transom a few times would not have damaged the transom unless it was already rotted out.

relax..... you're ok

Trailering it in the "down" position is fine. A 25hp isn't that heavy anyway. How much clearance do you have from the skeg to the road?

Go to Walmart and get the Transom Saver device and put it on....it'll save you the headaches, worry and possible damage of trailering with your motor unsecured. For $25 it's really a no-brainer;) Good Luck!:)

What robert said. I would not tow without a TS holding my outboard secure.

My engine defloperizer is ratcheting straps. I put just enough pressure to keep it in the up position. It is what I have always used, since I am cheap.

slamming down a couple times--or many times--won't hurt anything.

If you can trailer down, do it.

Otherwise tie the motor down against the tilt lock. And/or tie a board up under the motor. Tying it also keeps it from flopping side to side.

use the money you would have spent on the transom saver (sic) on beer, ice and gas.

A transom savor for this size motor can be had at Wal-Mart for like $25-30. And it would be faster to install/uninstall than tying.

There are cheap ways to do the same thing as a transom saver, as some have said (straps, block of wood, etc). But I like the notion that when the boat is parked in the yard and I have to do some work on the transom (or pull the LU, or what have you) that there is no way the motor's gonna fall on my head or pinch my hand if secured with a TS and rubber straps. To me, it's a double-duty tool.

As others said, you likely didn't damage your transom and probably not your motor. However, that raised motor "lock" is certainly not a lock as you learned. It's a way to raise the motor up and hold it in that position, but it's not made for trailering and I would never stick any body part between the motor and the transom unless the motor was supported by some other method.

With a 25hp motor, a cheap transom saver will work and so will a block of wood between the motor/transom to keep it slightly raised. Of course, tie the motor in place then. It's really all personal preference about which method to use. If you decide to trailer with the motor straight up and down, don't just check the clearance between the skeg (lowest point of lower unit) and the pavement. Check it while you are pulling out of a parking lot onto a road at an angle...such as leaving a gas station. That skeg will come a lot closer to the ground and or hit in those situations so you need to make sure that you have clearance in all situations, including when you bump across railroad tracks. If you have any doubt, get the cheap transom saver. It's much cheaper than a new lower unit.

I disagree about the "no damage" theory. Sure, do it a dozen times on a solid boat and no problem. Maybe 5 years of abuse, or 10. I dunno what the breakoff point is, but eventually you'll stress the aluminum casting of the motor mount and crack the transom as well.

I've never seen a whaletail crack an anti-ventilation plate, but I HAVE seen a bouncing motor crack an aluminum transom.

The sorry thing is that most people that ride on the tilt lock easily have a foot of road clearance, or the motor already comes with a trailer bracket.

Cut a block of wood put it in motor bracket t hold her up
Then use a couple ratchet straps and tighten it doun so she wont move.
and hey if your not sinking and it still starts everything is fine.......
Dont tow it doun somewere somehow It will find a nice spot to smack the ground - then you will have damage for sure!

I've got about 10-12" of clearance - thanks for the tips! MIT

Is "defloperizer" a technical term??? LOL

Do you even need to raise the motor while trailering? When I trailered my boat with a 15HP motor, there was plenty of clearance with the motor down. I just used a bungy cord around the lower unit and the trailer crossbeam. Worked fine.

Must be a short shaft

Its not the length of the motor's shaft, but the configuration of the trailer. A straight trailer frame will always ride high, while a low slung trailer with a drop axle will need more engine clearance.

Yes, but its not a marine term - it refers to a piece of clothing. I believe in this country they usually call them brassiers.
