well after so many trusting years of performance, my intermediate bearing took a dump.. I could tell it was going out for a while with turning sounds and knocking sounds.... and then the vibration started...
these Volvos are amazing how bullet proof they are....

before I rip this thing apart, is there any tricks to doing this bearing without pulling the engine??

I have the tools to do a engine drop but id rather not for a 20 dollar bearing...

also is that a standard bearing?? or do I have to order from Volvo... thanks!

one last thing, im guessing I only have one bearing?

You only have one bearing, and yes, you can pull the bearing and shaft without pulling the engine. If you are lucky.

Rust and corrosion is what can stop you.

You just need some big vice grips, and some copper or other soft metal to protect the splines from the vice grips and see if you can pull the shaft out. Many times rust and corrosion on the bearing and on the shaft where it goes into the flex plate will prevent that, you just have to give it a try. If it doesn't work, you pull the engine.

Like Don said it can be done from the outside!!!
Usually the water intrusion causes the stuff to go bad. Just hope it didn't make it so bad it won;t come apart.
Most don't know there is a grease fitting that would stop the bearing from going bad.
Some units have a plug that can be removed and a grease fitting installed.
If yours doesn't have it install it.

Make sure the snap ring comes out.
Need help bring it on down.

Are we talking about the PDS bearing? If so I always thought you could only get it out by pulling the motor...

well good news, theres no rust, no corrosion, looks super clean in there and the driveshaft almost came out by hand... i just cant get the C clips off with the tools i have... thanks don again for the awesome advice..

and jerry, my boat has that grease fitting installed, and was packed with grease, just my dumb dumb self let the bellows go....

also, i guess my install of the upper when i changed the bellows didnt go as planned... as i got water in the drive and milky stuff went everywhere in the bellows... im guessing i need to replace the upper seals and such? i replaced the ones don told me i think there was 4?

ANY time you do work on the drive, pressure test it to make sure it doesn't leak before you put oil in it.

i should have but when you have 3 hot girls on your boat in the driveway, begging you in bikinis and a bottle of jack... things get a little dicey...

also what are the chances of the seals being blown in the bearing carrier that the ujoint spline connects to in the upper housing is bad?

my bellow had a bunch of milky oil in it, and before i did the bellow change the outdrive was dry..

It's possible. Do a pressure check and find out. If a drive sucks in water when it cools down, it will be overfilled.
When it heats up the next time, that excess has no place to expand to and pushes out past the front seal since it's usually the weakest point for oil to push out.
