after decarbonizing do you use fogging oil

I just bought a 1987 evinrude XP150. The previous owner never used a decarbonizer. He owned two years, do not know about previous owner. Local mechanic recommended using omc engine tuner. He said to spray into carburators, then remove spark plugs and inject directly into cylinders. I bought the adapter to plug can into but he said the first time he would not use it rather spray into carbs and cylinders directly. Replace plugs and let sit over night. Remove plugs and blow out next am and run at idle. Then use fogging oil. Is this good information? When how how do you use fogging oil? Use on hot or cold engine, at idle or run normally after fogging? All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: after decarbonizing do you use fogging oil

Fogging oil used for winterization is normally sprayed into the carburetor(s) while the engine is running. The engine will often flood out -- if not, just shut it down after the oil has been drawn in (some smoke and rough running).

I have also used fogging oil sprayed directly into the cylinders through the plug holes -- after I've had the head off, for example. It's used as a lubricant to insure against dry starting. I think this is the way you would use the oil after decarbing -- want to make sure that there is lubricant in the cylinders after the solvent has done its job. If you fire up the engine first, you will have done so on potentially dry cylinders -- probably not fatal, but not good for the rings or the cylinder walls.

So do you think the fogging oil should be added before removing the plugs and blowing out the remaining omc engine tuner prior to starting the engine? Or should I run the engine after the omc engine tuner has sat overnight and then add the fogger???

Use the fogger before you start the engine. After the engine is running, the oil in the fuel mix will take over.

Thanks for your help. So, I have researched this site and did not come up with a uniform answer. What do you think about leaving the engine tuner in over night?

Sandman,

There will be no problem leaving the tuner in overnight! I have done it all of my motors every year and have never had any problems. Most of the opinions here that I have found recommend leaving it in overnight. I would say to either shoot fogging oil in after your done or fill a squirt bottle with a 50:1 mix and spray in in each cylinder, then hand turn the motor over 5 or 6 times to lube the cylinder walls before you start her up! You should be prepared for A LOT of smoke after you start it, so don't be alarmed. Good Luck , Rick

Or you can just use the Sea Foam brand Deep Creep which says that it also acts as a Fogging oil. This was the Decarb spray I used, recommended by 12Footer and it worked awesome on the boat, car, motorcycle.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

The object is to avoid any point at which you are turning the engine over with "dry" cylinders -- however you decide to do that.

You know, you really might consider just running the engine a while to see how it works before getting into all that decarb stuff. You may trying to resolve a problem that doesn't exist. You may find that the motor runs just fine -- in which case it would be best to just leave it alone.

Thanks: It does run well wide open and high throtle. It doesn't want to idle at all.
