after head gasket

Hey guys newbie here, at least in Mercruiser outdrives I've had boats on my life mostly River jet boats and outboards. I got this boat cheap of course and I've done a lot of work to it to get it to where it's at now. But after the head gasket I'm still getting water in the oil. I see people talking about the exhaust, I'm not sure how water can get into the crankcase from the exhaust if somebody could explain it to me would be great. It's running like a champ, but on the muffs I only have water coming out of one side of the transom mount the other side just has exhaust wondering if that has something to do with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated I've searched many other forms and have not found my answer ..thanks again.

Hi
Not sure which engine you have but the scenario for exhaust / water intrusion problems is that the manifolds are water cooled and if their are any cracks or leaks at the certain gasket areas water can seep into the cylinders through the exhaust valves

Curious what caused the head gasket failure- Was the motor overheated or frozen with water still in the cooling system?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Are ya gettin' water into just the base,..??

Are the spark plugs showin' signs of water in the cylinders,..??

If the exhaust is the problem, the water runs into the cylinders, past the rings to the base,....
Which of course can only happen when it's not runnin',.....

If yer gettin' water in the oil, while the motor is runnin',....
Ya got a cracked block, or heads,....

actually, if you have too much initial timing or a cam with lots of overlap (non marine cam), it will revert water from idle to about 1500 RPM with a wet exhaust.

is this a BBC or SBC? need some specifics

Thanks you guys for your input I appreciate it I'll have to pull the plugs and take a look to see if there's water in there but it sure does start and run good. I also have water leaking near the starter area when I rev it up a little bit I'm probably guessing freeze plugs but I still don't see how I'm getting it in the oil I didn't see any cracks on the manifold when I painted it do they crack on the inside? Also I only have water coming out the right side of the transom the other side just has exhaust dry. This is the 2.5 liter Iron Duke hundred 20 horse 1988 model thanks again for all your help I really appreciate it

if a core plug is leaking, most likely you had an issue with freeze damage. then yes, everything will crack, block, head and maniold.

as for the 2.5, did you make sure the deck and head are flat. if you over heat it, the head usually warps.

time to pressure test the water jacket

Completely normal.... Almost every engine will do that.

That sounds like a great idea how do you pressure test the water jacket?

Ayuh,..... Isolate it by blockin' hoses, plumb in a schrader valve, 'n pressure gauge, 'n pressurize to 'bout 15 psi,.....

If it won't pressurize, follow the sound, to the cracks,....

I think I'm going to look for a short block does anyone know where the engine gets its horsepower different from the car engine is it the cam and the head? Are the Pistons the same as a car engine?

Been looking all over online one thing for sure is that the car engine is definitely different hate to say it got a guy on Craigslist has a 73 marine engine will guarantee it for 400 bucks I thought that was pretty fair

Ayuh,..... Yer motor is Not an Iron Duke, which is an ole Pontiac motor,..... a car, 'n truck motor,....

Yer motor is the 2.5l Chevy, not used in cars, an industrial motor,.....
A 3.0l boat motor will bolt right into where yer 2.5l is, exactly the same bolt holes,....

What year is yer's,..??..??
A '73 could be dressed quite differently,.....
