After installing new impeller drive shaft won't turn

Hi - I installed a new water pump impeller (part no. 377178) see http://www.marineengine.com/parts/vintage-evinrude-johnson/278444/catalog.html?http://www.marineengine.com/parts/vintage-evinrude-johnson/278444/27844400001.htm. After I tightened everything up, being sure to tighten gently and make sure everything lined up, I couldn't hand turn my prop. I backed the four stainless steel bolts from the impeller housing out 2 turns and turned the prop easily by hand. But when I retightened the bolts, I couldn't turn the prop or even pull the starter rope..

Any ideas greatly appreciated..

Have you taken the water pump apart again to see if something isn't installed incorrectly ??

Which motor are we talking about?

It will be much stiffer to turn the driveshaft by hand with the new impeller in, but you are saying it wont budge at all?

Sorry all this is a 10 hp Evinrude 1963, yes it won't budge at all unless I back out before stainless steal impeller housing screws 1 to 2 turns a piece. I wondered if there was a seal, but the parts manual does not indicate such. user any such thing as putting the impeller in backwards?

Thanks all,

Was there any other work done, especially inside the gearcase? Is the width of the impeller identical to the old one? Not a Sierra impeller is it?

The impeller cannot go in backwards.

yes , you can put the impeller in with the vanes oriented in the wrong direction, some say they will flip around to be correct, but i really cant see one of the long vaned impellers doing that. did the impeller slide over the pin easily? sometimes you need to lightly file the notch so the pump will "float" a bit on the pin.

Where did you get the impeller, it looks like that number has been replaced by 775519, sure you got the correct impeller?

got impeller at Evinrude Johnson authorized shop, part in OMC bag, dealer measured original impeller vs the replacement part with his calipers and it checked out. I am thinking I loaded the vanes in backward for hand turning hte proop in forward (or trying to start with pull cord). New Rubber vanes cupped "backwards" would be like trying to roll downhill with your parking brake on. will loosen housing bolts, then try to twist prop with gears in forward and see if i can flip them. then retighten bolts. hopefully this will work. The dogs and me are anxious to get back out on the water.

Thanks all for your questions and suggesitons. Even if didn't reply to each suggestion I did check to be sure that I followed your recommendation.

happy boating,

yes sir. I am thinking that the woodruff key might have a large enough notch in the impeller shaft, thereby preventing the impeller from seating itself fully up under the housing.

Will reexamine to be sure impleller notch slides easily over the woodruff key; am thinking that it does not, thereby preventing the impeller from fully seating itself under the housing. Question, in the event I'm loading my vanes backward, should I lube them before retightening the impeller housing bolts?

Everything I have read about the impellers always said to turn the drive shaft 'clockwise' when installing the impellers to get the vanes going into the correct direction, and to put a light coating of oil on the inside of the housing where the vanes will hit to get it lubed properly until it is in the water. Should not turn it at all unless it is lubed or in the water.

You can put dishsoap on them if you like.

With the impeller housing upside down in your hand, looking into it, twist the impeller counter clockwise into it, then slide it down the shaft onto the key.

The drive shaft always turns clockwise, so that is why when the housing is upside down in your hand you twist the impeller CCW.

I used to do it that way but found I wasn't always 100% sure I got the drive pin in. Now I put the impeller on the pin and flat down on the lower unit and then lower the pump housing down the shaft whilst turning the shaft clockwise. Of course I have a spray bottle of soapy water nearby and spray everything first. Even the water tube for re-assembly.

Soapy spray bottles are also really good for finding leaks in tires, rims, air valves, floaty toys... etc... very handy...
