after saltwater use care?

I went to the coast of SC for Easter break and my jon boat went with me. Before I went to the beach, I had the local boat dealer replace my bearings and seals on trailer and regrease em with sum red grease. After I got home, i hosed out the boat and scrubbed with Dawn dish soap. The only questions are is about motor and trailer. I got a 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke. Instead of using a hose flush tool, I went thru the trouble of lowering the motor into a big trash can, filled can with water and ran the motor for 5 or so minutes. Is running the motor in a trash can just as good, worse, or even better when it comes to flushing out salt and mud compared to a hose attachment? Wut needs to be done to my trailer oher than hosing it down? Shoot grease into bearings?

well it may be just as good but, you have to think what you are flushing out in the can is going right back in your motor, which it seems it would be well deluted ,most i hear of is they use muffs to flush.

with smaller motors I try to get the pee stream to shoot outside the can and just let the hose run slowly into the can to replenish, you still get some of the recycled water but not too much. Just hose everything off, you don't need to regrease, it's not gonna destroy your stuff from a few days use.

Sorry to revive/hijack someone else's thread, but I've got a small jet and have a similar concern. I'm a freshwater guy historically, but would love to take 'er to some of the saltwater bays of Texas. Putting muffs on or dropping it in a can just isn't feasible. I've seen the locals take 'em to the local car-wash, but I want to do it right. Any advice?

TIA!

Agreed. Running on muffs is better than running in a drum. It's a constant stream of clean water.

After being in salt, I flush using the muffs and run "salt away" through the engine.

I boat only in the Gulf. Keep in mind salt water is very unforgiving on any type of metal.

I'm very appreciative of the replies so far, but having a jet provides nowhere to attach muffs and it's impossible to put it in a can of water. karatejoe's statement about the harshness of saltwater is really what's driving my question - before I dip it in the salt, I'd like to know how to properly care for it so I don't make the fatal $$$ mistake of letting the elements eat the metal.

TIA all!

That actually makes about as much sense (so far) as not even getting salt in it to begin with - which is the logic I've been sticking with so far! Having been a freshwater guy my entire life, this corrosive salt thing is a whole new animal to me, so I'm avoiding it until I get the warm-n-fuzzy that I have a good idea how to deal with it.

Until then, it's fresh-only for me!

I'd hardly call that "logic." How about "superstition" or "paranoia"? Salt water isn't battery acid, unless you have a crap boat.

For the jet boat guy. You most likely have an attachment somewhere in your cooling system to hook up a garden hose to flush the motor. Trace your cooling system and look for it. Probably has a screw cap on it.

You did right by using the pail. The amount of salt going from the engine into the pail is negilable. Running it on the muffs is fine also good. If you use the motor hose fitting, run the motor at idle. The motor has got to get hot enough for the thermostat to open and allow the fresh water to circulate thru the power head. FRED

That is exactly what many people around here do with their freshwater boats that see only occasional marine use. It takes far less time to run a few laps to rinse off the hull and flush the motor at the same time compared to doing it in your driveway. It also washes off the trailer. How does that not make sense???
