Aftermarket fuel injection

Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket fuel injection kits for a small block Chevrolet?<br /><br />My sons project car (1981 Camaro-229 V-6) has turned out very nice. Exterior and interior turned out better than I expected.<br /><br />However, my son wants a V-8. I have a line on a stock 350 from a 1985 for a decent price. The conversion will be easy. Especially with him turning the wrenches. <br /><br />My dilema is that this thing must meet the same emissions as the enngine that's in it now. Of course it will have cat. convertors, however I'm not sure I can meet it with a carbureted (non feadback) engine.<br /><br />Thoughts?

I have always wanted one but could never manage to cough up the money. I don't know about being able to do it either. With a very small aftermarket cam and a good carb/ignition system you might be able to pull it off. I would also put new cats on, the old ones are just asking for trouble, the life span is short whenever any abuse happens to them. Are you shure that it has to meet the 229's emission standards? I am thinking that the swap is legal as long as the engine was offered in the car. That CI should be what they base the emissions off of. I know that a 305 was available, just call it that, externally look the same.

Kenneth Brown,<br /><br />Thanks for the input.<br /><br />The best information I can get from the DMV (like talking to the wall) is that the emissions must meet the original spec. or that of the year of the engine installed, whichever is lower.<br /><br />So, with that said, I also think I may be able to get there with a carb. as long as the engine is pre 1981. 81 and up, had a computer controlled carburetor. What a nightmare those are. However, the V-6 just made it with a non feedback carb. I had to tweak it to the point that the engine ran awful, but it passed.<br /><br />I agree with running new cats. I was planning on that.

EFI is easy, and TBI is the way to go... <br /><br /> About the most expensive part is the wiring harness, if you were to buy a new one, otherwise the rest of the parts are plentiful in most junkyards and e-bay (throttle bodys, ecm's, distributor, ect)... <br /><br />You could slightly re-work an OEM EFI wiring harness from a junker and make it work.. I've done it, no big deal... <br /><br />Only one minor issue... The OEM intake manifolds for 305-350's model year 1986-87 and up would have to be modified by drilling out the four center manifold bolts... It's an easy fix... GM changed the angle of the bolt holes on the later heads..<br /><br />I would stay away from Holley pro-jection or any other aftermarket set-ups that don't use GM OEM style parts.... The main reason is Holleys fuel injectors are low quality and very difficult to come by if you ever needed to replace one.. I had to wait 2 months (manufacturer backorder) for a pair of injectors...

Go to....... www.holley.com <br /><br />They make throttle body and multi-port fuel injection for small block Chebbies and Pords. I'm sure they will have something you should be able to use.<br /><br />Emission wise, be glad you don't live in Peoples Republic of Calipornia.<br /><br />It's so bad here now, they are trying to pass a catalyic converter law for use on 4 stroke LAWN MOWERS!!!<br />This is no joke. They have also have baned the sale of some of these small gas powered scooters. Some genius in the state governnment doesn't think they don't burn clean enough. <br /><br /> ...Bob in Calif...<br /> (aka...the very left coast)

I've use the Accel Gen systems. They're incredible. Put 322hp to the ground with 122CID 4 banger using it..<br /><br />-Roger
