Aftermarket parts

Anyone have any opinion on aftermarket parts makers such as GLM, Seirra, etc? I saw a powerhead rebuild kit on ebay for 500 bucks with pistons, rings, bearings, gasket set, thermo rebuild, etc. (motor is 78 115 Evinrude)

Seems like a good deal but I have not had any experience with GLM or any other aftermarket company. Any advice, horror stories, or testamonies would be great.

Re: Aftermarket parts

I have a good friend of mine who is a Sierra and other aftermarket parts dealer and he hasn't had any complaints. I have ordered several Seirra parts from him myself and no trouble so far. As far as the rebuild kit, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Call your local marine shop and see what they charge for a rebuild kit, and go from there.
Hope this helps

Very good question Cap'n. This should be interesting.

I will say that if you buy based on a low price alone you may end up with a company that does not offer much technical support.

I looked at both Sierra and GLM's websites which both claim to be the industry leaders and both off one year warranties.

Beyond there websites, which are obviously biased, I can find little information from actual consumers.

I think you'll get some good input later tonight when you hear from some folks working at the dealer level.

Obviously Sierra is part of a much larger company (Telefex) and that helps their distribution. Especially since Aqua Power vanished.

Re: Aftermarket parts

When they say they will warrant a piston, or bearing, what do they mean? You remove the faulty part, and send it by mail! They decide the part was installed wrong, improper lube, improper break-in, maybe wrong phase of the moon. When someone say's they have piston's, ring's, bearing's , thermostat's, and a complete gasket set for a V-4 for $500, I would look the other way. I have a vision of re-cycled refrigerator handle's here. Here's my advice, " Don't buy a cardboard belt"

I pretty sure Sierra has just extended the warranty to 3 years parts and labour.

And the quality of Sierra is great.

Re: Aftermarket parts

I have to agree with R. Johnson. If you want to do a quality job, then why use after market? I have used some Sierra kits on a few jobs and was not impressed with them. Ill fitting gaskets, gasket material that I didn't trust....etc. I use only OEM parts and kits at the shop where ever possible and the exceptions are few.
