Aftermarket reeds?

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone can advise on the potential performance gains from putting in a set of aftermarket reeds. I am looking at poentially the Boyesen set that would match up with my 1984 Evinrude 140 crossflow. Stock and original (brass?) reeds are in there now.

What is it you expect them to do that's different than the way the motor runs now?

I'm hoping for a bit more top and and maybe a little more torque through the midrange? Even if it just planed faster that would be sweet.

What's your top rpm now?

In warm weather with just me in the boat about 5850 @ 39mph

When she's chilly out, and I'm low on fuel, and my seats are out of the boat, over 6000.

They should help with the idle and the transition from one rpm range to another will be smoother. You may see a slight increase in top rpm. You're close to but not at the range where the stock ss reeds start to flutter.

How would I be able to tell if the stock reeds are worn? When I did the rebuild a few years ago they looked discolored, but it may have been a brass-looking finish on a stainless reed... do these things just last forever?

Actually, yes they do. Unless you mess with them or the reed stops. Now that I've told you that they last forever, one of yours will break. Murphy's Law. But I gotta tell you, broken reeds are extremely rare.
