Hi All,

Looking for a spare starter (#50-66015T1) and seeing 3-4 times price difference between OEM and aftermarket ones. Are the latter ones that much worse? Which aftermarket makes are the best and which ones should I stay away from?

Thanks in advance,

Dmitriy

Ive used a fw aftermarket starters and the drive gears spun off both of them. I would rebuild a used factory starter before I'd buy another aftermarket.

Would you prefer a used OEM one over a brand-new aftermarket one then?

I just need a spare one as time during the season is too precious: this way I can have the current one rebuilt at any moment w/o any sacrifice.

If it works, and they are pretty reliable, I would go with a used Merc starter over a new aftermarket. My experience with the aftermarket ones has been pretty dismal.

$20 for a set of brushes for a used one .

That's what I'm saying: OEM ones are $200 or more while aftermarket ones start at $50-60.

I saw a used OEM one reportedly in good condition selling just for $25 yesterday - might go for that one.

List price on an OEM starter is $700. These are bargains.

A used $25 starter may be no bargain in the end.

Excessive cranking burns these straters up all the time.--When you hook a bad one up to a battery it will crank.----Will it turn the motor over fast enuff for instant startup ?---Don't think so.

I've ended up buying that used OEM one for $25 after they confirmed they had checked it when cranking the engine with it to test compression.

Thanks everyone for your replies!
