1991 Force 50 Model 507X91A
1991 Trophy (Bayliner) 15

My boat did not come with a tachometer. I've decided I would like to have one, but have never installed one before. Any suggestions of where I should go to get a kit for one, and what kit to buy? Please note that my console has no space for a flush-mount gauge - I'll need to put a surface-mount type on top of the console.

I'm assuming I need to install a sensor of some type in the motor - unless there's something already installed and all I need to do is tap into a terminal somewhere?

Any help would be appreciated.

In case it matters to you, the reason I want it is because we've used this boat successfully for 12 years to do tubing and recreational water skiing. But as my son gets bigger, I want to optimize the boat's ability to climb out of the hole. Before I buy a lower-pitched prop, I need a tach to make sure I'm not damaging the engine.

Howdy. Given the fact that you are limitted to mounting space and that this motor requires a special tach, try this instead.... Tiny Tach

Re: Aftermarket tach for Force 50

[Sorry about the late response - travel and subsequent ISP problems prevented me from getting online.]

Thanks for the tip on the TinyTach. Which model do I need for the Force 50 (2 cylinder)? Looks like the TT226NR-1C or 2C, but I can't tell which for sure.

Also, it looks like I need to buy a new one every 5 years because of the non-replaceable battery. Has it lasted longer than that for you? (I've had this boat for 12 years, and plan to have it at least another 12.)

It seems like there are broken links all over their website. Are they still in business?

Finally, when I was winterizing the boat last week I noticed that the terminal block on my engine has a screw for "Tach," with a purple wire going through the wiring harness up to the console. So it looks like a traditional gauge might be able to just be attached to that wire. Has anyone else done this, and what kind of tach have people used for this?

Thanks,

Rick

The purple wire is for a Tach. It will attach to a tach as the supply. You will also need to attach a ground and power lead. I'm not certain with the 1991 model but know that the 88 model requires a certain tach to operate (20 pole model). If you go with a Teleflex, insure you get the correct model for your motor (almost picked up the wrong one for mine - dealer opened the package to check the listings).

Also, check boat salvage yards. I picked up my tach and a better speedo from Budget Boats out of VA for about $20 each.
