You can buy most parts from your local dealer or from BRP-Evinrude on line. Click the diagram at this link and navigate to your motor.

http://shop.evinrude.com/

Most parts that are scarce can be found at sea-way.com in Seattle WA.

Do a search here for "1971 9.5HP"

Most routine service parts are available here at iboats.

The fuel/oil ratio is 50:1 - 87 or 89 US Octane to TC-W3 oil. The plugs were initially J4J which are now superseded by the Champion J4C. Many use a J6C which is a hotter plug.

The engine will run better with less carbon and plug fouling using synthetic or synthetic blend TC-W3 oil.

Yea, some people here refere to them as "the turtle backs" and yes they are great motors, but there are certain things that are a real challenge to fix.

is there anymore info or tips you guys could give me? I just bought it for $250- I thought it was a good deal?? do you guys think so? AND is there any special oils or types of lower end - gear oil I should use? I'm new to boat motors - are there products that I should or shouldn't run through the motor to help preformance?? Engine tune up products for small engines?? Any help is greatly appreciated

It is a good deal if it is worth that to you. A good running ready to go motor is certainly worth that. You can use regular 90 wt gear oil in the lower unit. Pull the two slotted plugs. One will probably be marked drain and the other vent. Let the old lube run out. Look for milk colored coffee lube. If it looks like that it has had water in it. If it's good and black it is just old. When you fill it fill from the bottom hole until it comes out the top hole. Use new washers on the drain screws when you put them back. Most of the "tune up" additives don't really do anything but clean up the fuel system some. Works to keep the system clean, but won't fix a dirty system. Do a decarb on it (search for a thread on the forum) that will clean the old carbon out of the motor. If it's running good don't fix it. If it gives you problems post it on the board and someone will help. Welcome to I Boats

Re: age 9.5 hp johnson seahorse (Help)????

You need to use a "high viscosity" marine gear oil. Most outboard manufacturers like BRP have the oil under their names as do companies like Shell's Pennzoil. http://pennzoil.com/products/marine/index.html#HighViscosity

Be sure to add a fuel stabilizer like Sta-Bil to your gas when you buy it.

BRP has a maintenance chart that you can download, most of it is applicable to your motor: http://www.evinrude.com/NR/rdonlyre...55-6BC1C69789FB/0/em_maintenance_schedule.pdf

much debate on the use of marine lube versus regular and I won't get into it here, but I used the regular 90 wt gear lube and don't have any problems.

Re: age 9.5 hp johnson seahorse (Help)????

what are people thoughts on oil wt for my 9.5 - some people are giving me different suggestions and now I'm confused on what is best for my motor??
also could you guys give me some opinions on using the j4c plug vs the j6c which apperently runs hotter?? anybody using these different plugs or have used both on there 9.5 and what was the difference in results for you - did the motor preform different - pros and cons? Thanks again

Re: age 9.5 hp johnson seahorse (Help)????

depends on how you are going to run it. The j4j was probably standard if you are going to be doing a lot of trolling the j6j is hotter and will help to avoid fouling. The lube I used in the lower unit is high viscosity, but not marine. My understanding of the marine specific lubes is they have a component that helps them still work if water gets into the lower unit. If that is not a problem then I would not worry and just use the regular gear lube at the auto parts store. It's much cheaper.

Re: age 9.5 hp johnson seahorse (Help)????

Agree on the trolling aspect, but BRP chart still shows the current recommended plug to be J4C. There have been a lot of changes in two stroke oils and gasoline since 1971, so using the current BRP recommendation is the safe way to go.

I find that when the compression gets low on my 9.5 motors, say in the 60 - 70 range, the motors run better and cleaner on the J6C. If there is no difference in operation, I stick with the J4C.

As far as I know, there is no ongoing debate on gear oil in re: marine vs. non-marine. Marine gear oil is designed to protect the steel parts from rust and corrosion in the event of water intrusion among other things.

As far as engine oil, TC-W3 [Two-Cycle, Water-cooled] is the NMMA certification for oils that have met the NMMA minimum standards for use in your motor. http://www.nmma.org/certification/programs/oils/registeredoil.asp?y=TCW32008
