I just picked up an Evinrude Lightwin 3. it's in super shape appearance wisebut I havent tried tu run it yet. The decal that states the mix ratio is legible escept for one small but important number.
The number I pulled of the motor reads 3018
51739

If anybody can help with the year and a mix ratio I would appreciate it very much. Thanx

Re: Age and oil/gas ratio

Ob, in the manual I have it says motors produced before 1959 should use 1/2 pint outboard oil with each gallon of gasoline. I concour that the motor is a 1956.(Outboard Motor Service Manual-4th edition)

Re: Age and oil/gas ratio

That would be a 16:1 mix.The richest I have seen listed for a motor of this vintage is 24:1.Many of the earlier motor mixing ratios were established when two cycle lubricants were inferior to those used today. To be concise as to the lubricant one would use in a given motor it would be best to establish whether the mains and rod bearings were needle type or closed design babbit shell bearings.Even with non needle bearing design engines of this vintage you will find that many owners are and have been successfully using 32:1 mix with no deleterious effects to lubrication points.
In any case ,I've made my recommendation and you've made yours.

Hi, Necro.

OMC's Repair Manual for their engines prior to 1964 says to use a 24:1 mix.

That is one quart of TCW-3 oil per six gallons of unleaded regular.

You wont be struck by lightning if you use 16:1, but you will get a lot of smoke and stink.

You can probably get away with 32:1, but 50:1 would offer high risk a fried engine.

I tend to go with manufacturer's instructions.

Good luck. :)

I'd like to thank everyone for the help. I used a 32:1 mix and after changing the plugs it started right up. Runs great but the carb drips, hoping the gaskets will swell a little and stop it, we'll see.

'afternoon' necro,

I just worked on one of these for a friend/neighbor. What a "Peach" of a motor. At 24:1 it does smoke up a storm.

Look at the carb and carb throat to try to determine the location of the leak. If you haven't serviced the carb for a while, I'd suspect a stuck or saturated float as the cause.

Treat her right and might get another 50years out of her.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!
