I know everyone on here is tired of hearing this question, but right now i have 2 west marine 650 dual purpose batteries. they are 8 years old and keep dying so i am going to buy some this weekend. what i have been doing is when i leave the dock, i run off both, when we beach or start fishing with motor off, i switch to #1. run radio, lights, bait pump. when time to start my 5.7 I/O, i switch to #2, get going, switch to both to re charge. now to me, what would be perfect is one deep cycle and one starting, but i have heard that it is bad to charge these together. so what types do i need? what brand do you recomend? if there is already a thread anybody got the link> i cant find one. thank you and sorry if you are tired of hearing this question again

And the answer is age old as well. It doesn't matter to the charing system whether you have a starting and a deep cycle on the same charging system. The voltage regulator looks at "system" voltage and cannot distinguish between the two batteries.

Size doesn't matter much either but you cannot go wrong with the largest batteries you have room for. You can't go to big, just too small. Matching them size wise is certainly a good idea but not a do or die issue.

That's what I run in my boat. It came with an excellent Mercedes battery as a starter battery. I added a "house" battery after I bought it. I used a Walmart Everstart Maxx, I use them in everything, they are great batteries and reasonably priced.
