Odd that it had to come from the UK though. Maybe some of this will make it over "the pond" :D

No Pain, No Gain

Teaser:
--------
EVERYONE has childhood memories of adventures and scrapes, from crashing bikes to falling out of trees.

But now it's official - kids should have as many action-packed adventures as possible.

That's the advice from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, who believe it's better for achild to learn the "valuable lifelong lessons" of skinned knees, sprains and even small breaks that come from outdoor pursuits, rather than being stuck in front of computers, game consoles and TVs.

The sad part is that it took a 'society' to 'discover' this. Every American parent who was raised before the days of Hillaryspeak knew this instinctively.

I don't know if I agree with that. We've been moving away from this since the 70s. The whole idea of softening our boys up, they play too rough, they're too loud, etc etc...Hillary is just a by product of that thinking and is now perpetuating the same.

Maybe, (just maybe) the pendulum is beginning to swing back toward common sense.

The sissification of American children began in the 50s with the rise in civil litigation over normal life events and the rise of female dominance of our family lives.

It is one of the reasons that American youth think they are immortal and can't find enough ways to dare fate when fate has become death, rather than a skinned knee.

Seeking risk is a normal part of growing up. Successful management of risk is learned by trials and errors. . . provided they survive the errors.

So very true JB.

My 11 yr old son is always being kicked out of the house by me, telling him to go fishing in the bayou down the street, or go get lost in the woods nearby (he has a cell phone).

He now has begun skateboarding, but I do make him wear the protective equipment. But not really to prevent injuries per say, but the protection allows him to try new tricks with a little bit more gusto. Also, if he gets hurt, he probably wont wana do it again.

There is way too much sissification these days. I worry about my brothers son, that boy wont be allowed to do anything for fear of gettting hurt or sick.

Re: Ah...Finally a refreshing dose of sense!

I know my three kids, (now adults, [two of them are completely deaf from birth]), have been goin' to RR island since they were babies.

They learned to swim like fish before losing their permanent life jackets, (so their was some incentive for them to do what came natural).

The 6.6 acre heavily wooded island is very rugged, (with a 150 high foot rock that has a spectacular cliff on the North side, [at least one bounce before the water, which would not likely be soooo good fer one's survival]).

Many of my friends were much more protective of their kids then I was when raising mine. N' I worried n' prayed about mine just as much as they did; I just knew that I had survived a similar upbringing reasonably well and IT WORKED: THANK GOD!! They have never had a boating accident running my fleet of black boat anchor powered ski boats either, (all three of them are very good at towing water toys, [glad I don't have to spend ten hours or so per weekend towing kids, n' guzzeling gas anymore]). The towing n' gas guzzeling still happens, but they buy some of the gas n' drive the boats themselves now. That used to really worry me!

I always had parents of visiting minors sign a very sobering risk disclosure statement with a medical release prior to going up there. Sometimes it would freak the parents out enough to stop their kid from having one of the best times of their lives, but I never got into a law suit, or did I have to take a kid to the emergency room. Now that time has passed and I can look back, my kids turned out fine. They aren't as spoiled as most of my buds' kids are, tend to use far more common sense, and only had minor scrapes n' bruises just like I did growin' up, and are much less likely to make dumb mistakes then my friends other kids, (who grew up under much greater micro management then I believe in). My $.02 JR
