One more reason I am thankful my wife doesn't read this forum. She gets enough crazy ideas by herself.

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

I just found how how awesome Netflix and the Wii is. We can watch stuff on both when they're hooked up to the Internet. However, it's been kinda cool without the TV. My kids are 9 & 10 and we've been playing more games together in the evening. I've also been to gym a bit more and am starting some of the projects that have been neglected.

On another wife note, she's been on a kick to buy local foods and try to get food that hasn't been treated with chemicals. We bought 1/3 of a meat steer and I can't believe how good it is. We only got it like 2 months ago and we're already talking about putting in an order for 1/2 a steer. We also have a beehive in the backyard so we can have our own honey. A buddy of mine just offered use of his 20 parcel so we can put more hives, so we might actually start a little honey & bee product business.

I actually want to cancel my DTV too. My house is networked, so between netflix, hulu, & the DVR on my computer I could easily see letting it go. That would save me about $1200 a year.

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

We ditched Dish Network about 6 months ago. We don't even have an antenna on the house.
Netflix, Hulu, Library and network websites keep us happy.

The WII plays netflix on the main living room TV. The kids are happy to find one of the 4 computer's in the house and watch something online.

All of our DVD's are ripped and sitting on a server in the house to be played on any TV.

My wife likes General Hospital- HULU the next day
I like Colbert and TheDaily Show- They each have full episodes the day after on their websites
The local news streams online the live newscast

Eventually, I'll upgrade our TV to a HD, but for now, it's only a 32" Tube TV. Once I have an HD, I can dedicate a PC to it. With the low resolution of the tv, It was un-usable with the PC- 640x480 and fuzzy.

Personally, getting rid of the tv totally was excessive. But to each their own. I would not agree to it but it's not my life. lol. And yeah, someone said something about the Daytona 500. Man, bad timing. lol

Remember the good ole days when after you bought your TV, you brought it home, plugged it in and it worked? Worst case is that you might have needed a better attenae but your only cost was for the TV itself.

They really screwed us all by making us pay so much just for TV. Most people pay $100 to $150 a month just to watch TV, it stinks if you ask me.

Rant off.

...

Okay, well maybe not completely off,

$3,500 HDTV
$150-$180 a month in Cable costs
$20 a month in extra on demand movie

A nice quiet evening with spouse and children bonding the way families do...

priceless

I vote for Divorce too LOL I pay around 80$ per month. No big movie channels. We pay for a LOT of channels we never watch but there are those that we couldn't live without. I love Pro and college football, for example

That's a different way of looking at it, Lady Fish. I never thought of it that way. Thanks for that.....

If anyone has any suggestions on how to watch a good number of Food Network shows and kids shows online I'd love to hear it. That's all we watch on cable anymore.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind getting rid of our Dish Network.......

I have had both dish, and DTV... I also would promptly get rid of the Dish Network crap.:D

Check out Playon. It works on the PS3, Wii, Xbox, & several other devices. You can install 3rd party plugins that gets you a host of other channels such as History, HDTV, TLC, etc. It was free back in the day, but I think you have to pay for it now, although you can do the trial version. I used it a lot before netflix got around to supporting streaming on the PS3.

I know I'm the exception in most groups but I am a true conservative. I've never in my life paid a dollar for satellite or cable tv content. Network tv is actually pretty good when you don't know what you are missing. We got the streaming-only netflix over xmas and having never had cable, it's all new to us for $8 per month. We get it through xbox and also have a media hub to stream it around the house plus you can get it on your PC's, Wii or many other devices. I'd bet i have at least $25,000 of my networth from not paying for tv.

I'm about to do the same. Just built a HTPC out of spare parts (minus the case, had to buy that) to watch Netflix on my 50" Samsung. I only watch 3-5 hours a week, this is more than enough. Bye bye Time Warner! :)

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

I'm also on the "Dump Pay TV" course. My solution has been to set up a streaming media server on a spare computer, then hook up our 3 TVs to the network using media player boxes ($50 apiece). The media server I use (tversity pro) can stream pretty much any content available on the internet (YouTube, TV.com, Hulu, NBC.com, CBS.com) and it shows up on my TVs in a format similar to the DirecTV guide. Also, most of the media is available via bittorrent download. If you set it up right, you can have your computer go out and search some bittorrent sites and automatically download new episodes when you see them. The only thing I don't get is the news and live sports. For that I will set up an outside antenna. I'm just sick of paying $80 a month mostly for food network, HGTV, and network reruns. My solution costs about $200, so it will pay for itself in three months time.

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

Got the Wii hooked up and have watched some stuff on Netflix. I can't believe that we'll be saving about $1200 a year but still able to watch most of the shows we like. I just need to figure out what to do for NFL Sunday Ticket when the season starts again. Anyone have any ideas about how to get NFL games?

Dishwasher = parts washer.

Just be sure you have: fast reflexes, a comfortable couch, and I guess some good books.

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

Haven't had cable or dish for well over a decade. Have an antenna on the roof but rarely watch broadcast TV. Mostly netflix now.

Yup..I unplugged cable as well. I have the same setup with netflix and rabbit ears and loving that im saving 80 bucks a month just to watch discovery and history channels :) .

I dont miss it one bit.

YD.

PS. HD broadcast blows cable out of the water as far as quality hehee.

Where did you find a way to stream Food Network shows? They don't have much on their site.
