I've removed lots of animals from chimneys, especially racoons. I can usually get the mother out by brushing her out the flue with the chimney brush and rods then pop her out the top and remove the babies from the fireplace and put them in a box out in the yard and the mother will come back that night to get her babies (I always wear gloves -- not just for protection, but to keep my scent off the babies because the mother may reject her babies if they smell another scent) Be carefull around them... they are cute, but they have some mean teeth and claws.. My customers usually freak out when I am removing the racoon because the mother will growl, huff and growl while I get her out. I would try soaking rags in ammonia and/or bleach and put them in the boat (as mentioned before) or try putting a radio in the boat on the loudest setting. Will definately irritate them (and maybe the neighbors -- but thats only temporary) and they should leave. If that doesnt work.... load up on the pellets and go hunting. Good Luck!!

They are difficult to get rid of,an oldsalt i use to know had racoons get into his boat a few winters ago, he discoverd this in the spring when he pulled the tarp back only to find that his boat had been trashed, these pests tore every seat in the boat the even ate the foam from the steering wheel. That same winter I had them get into my attic they tore a hole about a foot in diameter in the roof right through the shingles and plywood sheathing, lucky for me my home insurance covered the damage and the removel of the racoons, I had already evicted them once the summer prior, and sealed that entry, get the trap and get rid of them they don't appear to leave on their own and are difficult to scare off.

Well, I put bleach in the boat this morning, maybe they will be gone tonight. I'd hate to have to shoot them, but if is comes to that, oh well.

That was nice of you. Now the critter have that clean "springtime fresh scent" in their home. <br /><br />I didn't suggest bleach. You need ammonia...it will be mildly painful on their sensitive nose, but not harmful...if they leave.

just don't mix bleach and ammonia, the combo will release clorine gas in a leathal concentration. <br /> once vacated a entire supermarket for 3 hrs while the fire department vented the store. one gallon of each. pool chems do burn down houses and cars. <br /> this post is a reminder to protect you, not the coons.

18 rabbit. Someone told me to put bleach cause it was sensitive their senses. And it is a good thing that wajajaja told me about the amonia thing cause I have that as well and was going to put both in the boat, right next to each other. Good thing I never did. <br />I did not want to go into the boat so I just poured bleach all over the floor and where they sleep(which is under my captains seat). Hey, at least my floor is clean now

Well, the coons were still there as of Monday morning, but death was averted as I flushed them out. <br />My neighbor and I took the hose with one final attempt to get rid of them. The coons were under the captains seat so we put the hose there and turned on at full blast. <br />Needless to say, there was yalping and crying as the 2 baby coons were taking in more water than they could swallow. The mother coon came out with one of the babies and if there wasn't a window between her and us, I think we would be getting stitched up. <br />The mother coon did not want to leave but we persuaded her with a large pole. Don't worry, we did not hit her(more than once). <br />Seriously though, I don't want to hurt any animal and never did intentionally. <br />At least the racoons are gone and now I can get back to fixing my boat for the summer.

One more thing, DO NOT come in contact with any raccoon excrement. There are some nasty wicked parasites and bacteria in that stuff. Wear gloves! Clean the area with bleach...I think it is 1/4 cup bleach to a gal of water.<br /><br />I just read the raccoon fact sheet for New York State. It says no effective raccoon repellant has been found. I am presuming testing of legal chemistry only. I guess you were reduced to the water hose all along and we just didn’t know it.

Thanks 18rabbit. <br />We are replacing the whole interior. Now I have a chance to put up the canvas while we are doing repairs so more coons come in. I plan on bleaching the whole area where they were. <br /> I also plan on putting amonia in the boat just as a precaution to avoid such unneccesary prediciments. <br />Cheers and happy boating, <br />Bro Chris<br />I'll post pics of the boat before and after pics after I am finishing it.

Hi all,<br />Man, after reading this tale of woe I am sure pleased we dont have any of those coon critters in New Zealand.<br />Bad enough we've got millions of possums to shoot though coz they are one HUGE problem here. Damm things carry TB and have very anti social behavior if found in your house.<br />It's fun throwing lead at them to knock em outa their tree. 12 ga and .22 both get used.<br /><br />go get em,<br /><br /><br />Peter
