Air and water temp gauge?

Hi guys,

While shopping for our new boat, the bride and I noticed on some very fancy models they had a gauge that read the water as well as air temp. Thought it would be a neat addition to ours, but haven't been able to locate such an animal on the net. Anyone have any idea where I might find something like this, or does it sound like something that would be a factory only item?

Re: Air and water temp gauge?

The auto stores have all sorts of air temperature devices (they are called thermometers). Water temperature is included with most fish finders. In order to measure water temperature a transducer is required. In my view it is impractical (economically) to buy a combination air/water temp device when a fish finder is more practical since it provides depth, a picture of the area you are over and if you happen to fish, it may even show you fish. Air temp can be measured with a $1.99 thermometer that can be stuck nearly anywhere on the helm.

I realize all of this, but what I want is something that looks nice too. Don't need a fishfinder or a second depth finder. I know what a thermometer is and thanks for the sarcasm. What I want is what I posted on. A nice looking gauge that will mount in the dash that reads both water and air temp. Guess I will keep looking...

"In order to measure water temperature a transducer is required".

I learn something everyday!

Re: Air and water temp gauge?

To measure water temperature electricaly yes -- you need a transducer (as in a locator transducer with built-in "temp sensor" )or you need a paddle wheel speed "sensor" that includes a water "temp sensor", or the transducer for your depth gauge must include a water temp "sensor" if that feature is included. If you hang a thermometer over the side - no you don't need a transducer or sensor! Remember -- this gent (or his Mrs.) is looking for a neat "gauge" so whatever features that device has, if it is electrically driven it must have a transducer with a built in sensor or a water temp sensor. This is exactly why I suggested what I did. Besides, a water temp sensor/transducer/sender can only measure the water temperature in the water layer in which it is suspended. four or five feet down is much colder than the surface, So yes -- you do (or can) learn something new every day.

First, Welcome to the Forum.
Second, listen to Silvertip's counsel. He was not being sarcastic, just factual.

Now, for my two cents worth... If you need a water temp and air temp sensor, that looks nice, is stylish, and works all the time without fail, just ask your wife to stick her finger (any one will do) in the water. This will give you the temperature to the degree that you need to know it. Too hot or too cold for swimming. That's about all a digital temp gauge is gonna tell ya. Then have her hold her wet finger up in the air. That will give you a pretty accurate reading on the wind direction and air temp. The cold side of her finger will be the direction from which the wind is coming. If her finger comes back in the medium range, things are OK. If it comes back "well done" or "rare" range, tell her she better put her top back on !!!

Regards,

Steve
