For reassembly, just make sure the new impeller is facing left.... (in my non expert opinion of course)

Well.... Maybe you did! The bad impeller isn't in there anymore right?

And DO NOT put it on inside out!

Oh man this is TOO good!!! :pound:

Sure - it's all fun and games when it's someone else's money LOL. My wife is soooo not happy about how much time and money this restore project is taking.

Back to the task at hand, I'm guessing the kit will not have any instructions so I have 2 questions.

1) Related to mbhoag's comment about "facing left" (which I'm still unclear if that was a joke or not haha), should I curve the fins to the right, inside the housing like is what looks like the old one was doing in the pic I posted up a few posts?

2) What should I grease when I reassemble (impeller, shaft, spline) if anything. What type of grease?

Back to task... lol

1) I noticed there are a couple different procedures for the merc lowers depending on which type it is.
Did you figure out which type you have based on that manual link? Is it Type B?
It talks about shimming etc to maintain proper pinion lash or something. Another type, you don't have to do that.. :noidea:

As for aligning the impeller vanes, all I've had to do on mine, were to put impeller key on drive shaft, put impeller on drive shaft fitting over the key, then lube the inside of the housing with petroleum jelly, or a touch of grease, then place the housing over the driveshaft till it sits on top of impeller, then press downward on the housing while rotating drive shaft CLOCKWISE.. This set the impeller into the housing properly.

2) I put some marine grease on the drive shaft splines, but be careful NOT to get any on the very top of the driveshaft.
Too much on the top of the shaft, and the lower won't go in all the way because the grease is trapped at the top.

It really was that easy on my end, but again... I don't have a Mercury..
That link I sent you, if you go further into the pages it talks about water pump assembly and then lower installation as well.
Just need to be reading the section for the right "Type" of lower.

I ask the gurus reading this, to add/correct/confirm this... :D

Hope it helps!

Yes, it’s a type “B”. I did read into those pages quite a ways but until I actually get hands on experience, most times I might as well be reading the Greek version lol.

So clockwise while looking down the shaft towards the lower unit (as opposed to “up” at the head) correct?

The kit arrived today. Admittedly it has A LOT more parts than I expected. I've read and re-read the section on the boatinfo site that applies to my motor but the pictures are so grainy... ugh!

Since there are only a couple of us reading this thread I don't mind sounding like an idiot, because, well... never mind LOL. Here's what my $100.00 got me.

Since the manual is not all that helpful I'm trying to take it apart as slowly and methodically as possible. Learning where each piece goes as I disassemble it.

However, I am now stuck again and hoping to get some help here. I can't seem to get the bottom of the housing out of the lower. I tried to gently pry at it but am afraid to put much pressure on it at all.

The new piece looks like this:

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

Dang!
That's a bit more involved than I'm used to on the Johnson's.. LOL
Nice pics by the way!! Useful!

Did a quick search and found a video for a Mercury impeller replacement.
This is for a different year, but sure looks a LOT like yours, so maybe it'll be helpful?

Other than this, I'll zip it, and let the gurus take it from here... :D

Thanks for the link! That helped a ton! Good to see I'm not the only one that got stuck on how to get the housing base out haha. However, now I'm a little concerned because his LU came out with pieces that mine didn't. Off to check the motor for those.....

Don't forget, that video is a different year than yours, so some things could be a little different. :noidea:

Was just an example vid..
The gurus will get you sorted out I'm sure! :D

Actually, after I got the bottom housing piece to pop loose things escalated rather quickly
spill.jpg

So what the heck, as long as I'm at it I might as well replace the LU gear oil as well

I was able to get the new water pump parts put in though so that was a success! I do have a couple extra pieces that came in the kit that I have no clue what to do with. I'm thinking this kit fits several different motors and maybe they are not even for mine?
extras.jpg

something that I was curious about even before watching the vid was this white plastic nipple. whiteNipple.jpg

In the video he had an attached rubber hose but didn't show where it was connect to. I'll have to do some searching and see if I'm just missing that hose or what.

Anyway, thanks for the help jbuote!!!

Ok... I'll stick around... lol!
Would love a guru to chime in here though...

I wouldn't expect any leakage of LU oil, but then maybe that lower block you put in is part of the sealing for the LU? :noidea:
In any event, I think I'd consider a pressure and/or vacuum test on the lower unit now before you fill it up.
Just to be sure it isn't leaking and seals are good.
You don't want any water getting in there..

That white nipple you circled, sure as heck looks to me like a fitting for a speedometer hose..
Probably runs up the foot, and then there's a spot somewhere to attach the boat side tubing to the engine for a speedometer.

:D

Yep, sure was. Since I had the unit on it's side, as soon as I broke the bottom housing piece loose, oil starting spilling out thru the driveshaft bearing. And there's were all the guru's said "Well duh, what did you expect to happen" LOL. But hey, you can bet I won't make that mistake again!

For pressure/vacuum testing, any tips on where I can pick up a cheap kit? I also saw some vids of homemade ones.

Speedometer... Yep, no such thing on my fancy boat :D

Yeah, I just went with the bicycle pump with a gauge and connected it to an LU fill kit hose. Had it all handy...
Pumped to about 10 psi, and let it sit..
If it didn't drop, I called it good.. LOL

Quick search found a few, but they are anywhere from $50 - $100+
Might be able to find a automotive brake bleeder kit that can do pressure and vacuum...
Don't think those are too expensive. Then fit the gear oil pump hose to it.
