Air filter

Should my 1990 V8 5.7 Mercruiser be fitted with an air filter? I'm sure I've heard mention of such in various posts etcetera. If so, is it housed in the flame arrestor? Any information welcome, thanks.

A close mesh screen is all that's needed.

Ayuh,.... Yer motor needs a flame arrester, not an air filter,....
