Are outboards supposed to have air filter? If not why?

Never ever have I seen an outboard with an air filter for the reason Dhadley gave, on the street there is dust and grit everywhere but on the water there is no dirt to get stirred up.

Judging by how many really old motors there are running around I think it has been proven that they aren't needed on the water.

Touche'. It seems obvious that with the current technology comes new ways of aspirating engines. Interesting though, I have never thought about it.
