Dumb question # 214:
This is on a ~2008 90hp Mercury 2 stroke outboard engine model 1090412DD
As I replaced the removable top part of the engine shroud on this engine after changing the plugs, I realized I had no clue how combustion air made it to the engine. The bottom part of this top cover piece seals up nicely against a rubber gasket and there are no holes or vents visible anywhere. On the top of this main piece is a small removable piece that looks like it might be some sort of vent, but when I removed it became clear that the piece was purely decorative: there was no air vent under it, the main piece was entirely closed up. Sections of each side have double walls, but again, I see no way for outside air to get in there. The engine runs, apparently fine, but I can't figure out how it gets air and it's bugging me. I sent a query to Mercury asking for a diagram of the air flow and they responded that they didn't have one and basically "it's fine".
Anyone have a clue they can spare?
