I think we may have this answered but wanted to see if I could confirm the thought and maybe find a solution other than what I am thinking.

I have a 1999 5.7 Mercruiser Inboard. Last Sept took on a lot of water due to rough seas and the bilge going out and never knowing it until getting back to the dock. Everything ran fine. Replaced the cooling system in Nov and had several more fishing trips in Nov. Went back to the boat in Feb to do some maint and she would not start. Batts were low so I charged them. Still wouldn't turn over. Had the started checked and it was bad. Replaced starter and had good turn over but still no fire at all. Have checked the fuel, distributor, cap, coil, the plugs and wiring. There is good blue spark all the way to the plugs. I pull the plugs after attempting the start and they are dry. Tried pouring fuel in the carb and still no fire. Here is the interesting part...put hand over the carb and the air comes out, not in. Put finger over the PVC inlet and air rushes out after attempting the start and removing the finger due to lots of pressure. The exhaust flappers on the transom suck tight in while attempting the start.

After 10 plus hours of troubleshooting the thought is that most or all 16 valves only partially open and close due to some corrosion. I will do a compression test tomorrow.

Looking for thoughts or past experiences and hopefully a fix other than pulling the heads.

Thanks, JEC

i'd throw a compression gauge on there. fuel+compression+spark= run

I would do a leak down test to identify which valves were stuck and wether both heads have to come off.

Can a starter turn backwards? Reverse polarity? Will the pinion engage? It's a little odd to me that the exhaust flappers are sucked in and air comes out the intake continuously. If it was a couple of stuck valves wouldn't it do some sucking and blowing the right way?

I'm just going to throw this out there; it almost sounds like it jumped time.
I have seen instances in automotive, where a worn-out timing chain jumped several teeth upon being turned of. Go figure..

I can't believe it. This is exactly what happened. I bought the marine starter from O'Reily auto parts and they could not cross the part number and the guy ordered a starter based on the picture. This is the only thing that makes since. I did a compression check today and every cylinder went to 30 and fell off quickly. I was ready to pull the heads starting tomorrow! Now I will go back and get the right starter. Thank you so very much. JEC

the Arco marine catalog has some nice pictures to ID starters for CW or CCW rotation by looking at the chamfer on the starter drive pinion gear.

couldn't this spinning backwards caused some damages to the valve train?

Re: Air Flows Backwards While Atempting Start

No ^^^^^ the valve timing doesn't change, just goes backwards, the direction does not determine valve action as related to the pistons, they can't hit unless the gear timing is off.

It can cause oil to be pumped away from stuff, and air cleaners (auto) to be pushed out and exhaust flappers to get sucked in etc. And water ingestion . . . Be careful!!. I'd crank it with the plugs out to be sure, and probably change the oil. The seawater pump would've also been running backwards, so ingesdtion is unlikely, but any latent water near the exhaust manifolds may have found it's way in. The impeller may get messed up as it has now been flopped over the wrong direction, and now will be flopped back. If there was any hardness set, it may break a vane.

It didn't start, so some of these concerns are probably nothing more than that. Stupid of me to originally think polarity, obviously reverse rotation was the probability and apparently confirmed?

Re: Air Flows Backwards While Atempting Start

Oreily guy researched part and was sorry for the mix up. He is letting me do an even swap for the right starter 4 weeks later. Man, I wish I could charge him for all the hours of maint, troubleshooting, and worry over this, but I'm just tickled to know I don't have to pull both heads to fix a bunch of corroded valves. Thanks for the help!! JEC
