Do I need them? Is it a big deal if I run without them? Will the motor run lean? Its a '79 140 Seahorse.

The reason I'm asking is that I replaced the fuel lines and I can't figure out how to get the Silencer extensions on without kinking the fuel lines. I had them installed correctly then I needed to remove the carb do to something stuck in the float valve. When we reinstalled the carbs we kinked the fuel line, now I can't figure out how to get them back without kinking them.

Running w/o the silencer installed is inviting engine damage due to lean runiing. See the BRP Evinrude website and look at the parts list for correct arrangement of parts.

The motor uses sound waves as part of the tuned exhaust. The silencer is part of it.
