The handle / air vent on the back of my 93 rude 120 opens up like a latch, I would like to open it up to allow air flow. is this recommended? will it help cool or be beneficial in any way to the engine or would it be detrimental?

anyone do this to their engine?

Re: AIR VENT V4 Looper

why not? it seems as if the hood / cowling and "air vent handle" was designed to be opened, if you take off the two front bolts it opens like a perfect air scoop

does anyone have any experience with this?

That is a lame answer to my question, waste of your time and mine. spray.... rain? shouldn't be getting any spray up there, and as for rain I would just put it down in the rain.

please don't reply to this thread if you have zero knowledge about the topic.

I just would have thought that having "ram air" or a scoop drawing cool air into the engine compartment would be beneficial to getting fresh cool air into the air box and around the engine.

It could also lean out your mix and burn a hole in a piston. Best not to mess with the fuel/air mix on a two-stroke.

If you don't want any opinions on why not to do it then don't ask the question. The forum is for people to answer you. If you already made up your mind to do it then do it, but apparently OMC thought your engine would run right the way it was made.

Sorry if this is a lame answer also, and not for nothin, this should be in the General outboard questions forum, not repair..

Opening that up wouldn't do a thing for the motor. It gets all the air it needs just the way it is. Its facing the wrong way to act as an air scoop or tunnel ram. If it did, then you'd need to rejet, add expansion chambers, lower your exhaust ports, etc.

You can open that up. We found that it really didn't do anything, especially at 6000 rpm or less. But you do need to be aware that there is a mist of water in the (air) turburlance back there. Some of the other loopers actually have a "dam" inside the hood so the water has a place to fall into and get routed out.

Even on some of the "performance" hoods the louvers aren't actually open. And on some, opening the louvers actually hurts performance. Some of the (much) older crossflow V4's did indeed benifit form letting more air in but the loopers are fine.
