alarm...beeping

Just out for the 2nd time on our new used boat. 1994 mercury o/b 175hp. I am getting a constant beep, beep, beep. from the alarm behind the dash. Temp gauge seems OK, volt gauge seems OK, but does fluctuate a bit. I topped off the oil resovoir and still get the fast beeps. I did get it to go off for a few minutes when I adjusted the trim on the motor, but when I adjusted it again it kept going. Now I can't get the alarm to go off. Any ideas where to check next?

If it's a continuous or steady alarm tone and you aren't sure the water pump and impellor have been serviced in the last year, you should start there.

Do not run the engine until you are running pre-mix oil(50-1), if there is something wrong with the oil injection system, you could do serious damage to your engine.
Which oil tank did you top off? Was it the one on the motor or on the boat? Take the cap off the engine tank and turn it upside down and then reinstall. DO NOT over tighten. Start up the motor and see if it the alarm goes away. If not loosen the engine oil tank cap just enough to see if oil in moving to the tank and make sure it is full.
If that does not help, trace the wires from the oil cap, one will go to ground, the other has a bullet fitting, unplug it, does that stop the alarm? Do the above and repost. Next step would be to determine if the oil pump is working properly. The sender there is only a motion sensor which works on a maginet like the old auto speed controls. It only tells you the shaft is turning. You can disconnect the oil line from the pump to make sure it is pumping oil.

Re: alarm...beeping

Thanks guys. The water pump and thermostat are due this year. I'd like to learn how to change those myself.
I went outside before reading your posts. I filled the 3gal resovoir about 3/4 and filled the small engine resovoir almost all the way. I ran it in the driveway for about 10 minutes and got the temp up to a steady 170. No alarm noise. My only concern is that last trip out it took about 20 minutes on the water for the alarm to go off. I will bay test it tomorrow and let you know.
Thanks for the support. I was real bummed to buy this boat and already have problems.

I just came back in from mowing myself. Read my last post again, let the small tank fill all the way up. It has to be full and the easiest way is to loosen the cap until oil starts to leak out. Good Luck!

I know on my 89 100hp there is a sensor in the oil res that goes haywire, there is a little module that has 4 wires coming from it, if you disconnect the white wire that goes frm the tank - to the module,, that coule help you troubleshoot, leave the others , they are for temp, etc.

Re: alarm...beeping

I did get out this weekend. No alarms to report. I ges it was some sort of oil issue. Hopefully that situation is corrected.
Thank you all for the support !!
