Alarm - Help!

My 87 Merc 150 is now setting off alarms.

When I put it away for the winter, she was running perfect. Last week I took her out. I started getting a very light beep almost a scratching sound. Once I got the revs up it stoped. But then periodically started again.

Today I took her out again. Within 1 minute of pulling out of the dock. The alarm became a blaring loud scream. I immediately stoped, waited 20 secs or so and started it up. It went right to the alarm again.

One thing I did notice, is that varying the RPM seemed to make it go away for short stints. Keeping it at idle sometines did not make the alarm go. Also, leaning the boat into a turn or hiting some light chop made it want to stop.

What does this sound like ?

Thanks John

Re: Alarm - Help!

It sounds like the impeller has failed. I recommend you do not attempt to start this engine until it has been changed. Replace the thermostat also,or at minimum, remove it clean, and check it for proper operation..But they are cheap, so if it were my way home,it would get replaced.

12footer - tx for the comeback

I replaced the impeller and housing after the first time out.

Either I messed up the install, or its something else.

The motors 'seems' to run fine. Water is streaming out the tell-tale nicely, but the alarm is still going.

Note - I have NOT been able to reproduce on land using the hose & muffs. Maybe I did not run it long enough.

If you're sure about your pump, it sounds like a sticking thermostat to me. It takes a while for the water to get hot enough to set the alarm off.
