Alarm sounds all the time on 48 special

Recently bought a ratty old starcraft with a good hull and non-running 1995 48 special. Got the engine running but the alarm sounds all the time and it's inside the shift case so I'm having a hard time getting to it. This thing uses premix so the oil shouldn't have an alarm (that's really a question lol) and the overheat sensor is somewhere on the engine - where is it on the engine?

Found the overheat sensor - pulled the tan wire and the alarm is still on all the time. Going after the shift case now.

if you pulled the wire going to the head i would say its a bad horn.

you can go to googlebook.com and get partial repair manuals.......i think i saw the warning horn test in there.

you can also run a search on this site for instructions.

also shopevinrude.com has exploded diagrams and parts lists.

thos horns are a little pricey ive read somewhere about using car horns..........i believe it was one of the guys with a boat shop that was doing it for a hard of hearing customer........but can prob get one for a car at a salvage yard for next to nothing.

Got to the alarm and pulled the tan wire - nothing - still screaming at me. Pulled the purple wires and it stopped. I hate to go without an alarm so I'll be rigging something up at some point in the future. Now if I can just get the carbs to smooth out we'll be in business.

Thanks DR - glad to be here. Been an on again off again lurker for a couple of years.

If the alarm sounds all the time,it means that there is nothing wrong with the alarm horn. Most probably, one of the wires in the remote control box is shorting out.Or the wires are hooked up in the wrong place on the switch.
Don't tear the horn out,it very obviously works extremely well.

If you pulled the TAN wire from the horn, while the key is in the ON position, and the beeping continued, the horn is faulty, and will need to be replaced. You will find them to be a bit pricey for what they are.

FYI, if the beeping would have stopped when you pulled the TAN wire from the horn, that would have meant that a sensor component was at fault, such as the sensors, VRO, Oil Tank, etc...

Determining which of these is at fault is found by removing the TAN coloured wire from each one seperately, until the beeping stops. That indicates the faulty component.

I didn't tear it out - just disconected it.

Thanks - the horn is faulty.
