Get the pump off and on the bench, then you will see the seal that needs changing.

The Clymer engine manual gives me the impression that it can be replaced with out removing the pump, just the impeller housing. If the pump has to come off are there gaskets that I will have to buy to reassemble it? I feel confident the seal is what has to be replaced and I do see where it is.

Just one clarification about the pressure sensors/temperature sensors. You probably have 4 "sensors", 1 pressure switch (for the alarm), 1 pressure sensor (for the gauge), 1 temperature switch (for the alarm), and 1 temperature sensor (for the gauge).

The pressure switch that you were disconnecting probably had a single wiring going to it. I have used automotive pressure switches from the parts store. Here is one that I quickly found and I'm not sure if it would fit the existing port, Buy BWD Engine Oil Pressure Switch S334 at Advance Auto Parts

A little clarity here for the OP:

1) The alarm is supposed to sound when you turn the key on. Please go ask a few of your Marina mates to show you how there's work. Merc or Volvo. I know it never went off before, but it IS supposed to.

2) Changing the sensor may be prudent , but...

3) ... changing the sensor will NOT have any impact on the irritating nature of the alarm.

Also, that alarm is similar to the check engine light on a car. Before you start the car, the check engine light is lit, but once the engine is running, the light goes off.

I now know the alarm is suppose to sound and should go off when the engine starts but my alarm does not shut off and my pressure is good. Why it never sounded in the past I still do not know. Hopefully a new sensor will sound when the key is turned on and stop when the engine starts. I should be getting it today or at least by tomorrow.

A warning light would be peaceful :)

New engines might have a fancy delayed alarm sensor, but I really doubt an early 2000's engine does.

Edit: I gave you the sender part number, not the sensor. My fault.

I finally had the sense to read in the engine book about the alarms - dah! It should sound when the key is turned on as has been stated and it does not have a delay switch or anything fancy.

but my alarm does not shut off and my pressure is good.
I believe this is the first time we have heard this. No wonder there is some confusion. Very important addition :)

It sounds like it used to never go off, and now intermittenly doesn't shut off when it should. I would think a new sensor will fix your problem. Report back and let us know how it goes.

Don't bother with a light as the alarm seems to have got your attention! Glad you finally found the manual.

Re: Alarm sounds whe I turn key to on position

I picked up the sensor today and installed it. The alarm SOUNDS when I turn the key on and goes OFF when the engine cranks. I still don't know why it never alarmed for the 2 years I owned the boat or why it started to alarm and not turn off now BUT it is working now -phew.

I am waiting for the raw water pump seal to come in to fix the drip. I am hearing stories that the seal is just a temporary fix and that every one who has put one in has ended up replacing the pump a short while later. I think that is not going to be the case on my engine. Fix it once and fix it right, that's what I say - I hope! Thanks to every one for guiding me along with the low oil pressure problem. The lesson here is if you have the engine manual read it! I'll post when I get the seal installed on how that went. Thanks again all.

I had the same issue, alarm was very, very loud. Replaced oil sensor (marina did) and all fixed - oil pressure normal alarm now at startup. Hope that helps.

" Fix it once and fix it right, that's what I say" and after the seal you will do it all again for the bearing!

I hear the seal goes before to long and it's a new pump your looking to install.

The seal is in and it was not hard to install at all. The pump is NOT leaking and I am hoping that the seal is a permeant fix that last for a long while.

Thanks to all who helped.
