Alarm Tones 1984 Mercury 150 XR2

OK guys, I am at a loss here. My O/B is a 150 V6 with oil injection. I know most people want to remove the OI and premix, but that is not me. I am getting a continous beeping from the alarm module. I am getting oil to the engine. I have replaced the module, the oil tank float, and the pump is new. There is an unconnected tan/blue wire from the harness on the control. If I put ignition 12V on that wire, the alarm goes away. I don't know if that is right thing to do. Any ideas?

As in Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, or BeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeP constantly? An intermitant beeping is oil, a solid beep is overheating.

A soild continous beeping. I have installed a temp gauge. Temp is 160 F at idle. Water pressure is steady 6 psi at WOT

This is an intermitent beeping that won't quit. It is not a soild tone.

Check the level of your engine-mounted oil tank. Take the cap off and fill it anyhow!

Mcbass may have it figured out, you have to make sure you have everything purged and full. Main oil tank filled to the fill line, not completly full, oil tank under the cowel purged of all air, losten the cap, run engine untill oil starts to leak out, then tighten the cap. This is probably the single most common problem of the oil alarm going off.

Pull the oil pump and inspect the gears... If ok, reinstall, hook up a small tank with premix...<br />Start her up and pull the oil line from the pump and check for proper flow just to make sure...<br /><br />Let us know... Of course check what MC suggests first...

Hey, Thanks guys. On a hunch, I took the cap off and turned it upside down so the float made contact with the magnet and the darn alarm went away. I filled the tanks, purged them, and now no alarms. Since the engine is pretty old, I am going to replace the engine crankcase checkvalve for insurance. <br /><br />Now another question. I replaced the water pump and am now ready to reinstall the lower unit, but I left the gear housing in neutral. I was supposed to leave it in forward. What do I do now? It is a Type R Mercury gear housing.

Aint it great when life is simple???<br /><br />I would think that as long as you didnt change anything you should be able to just put it back the same way.

I don't think the shift shaft rotated (the prop is in neutral). I'll give it a go. Thanks Dude!

I would also take Kclosts advice, those mid 80's 150 V6 oil pump internal gears are notorious for going bad, resulting in motor distruction. Sounds like you may have her wooped, but a quick check of the pump shaft to see if it's rusted would be worth your time. If the shaft is rusted it tends to wear the plastic internal gear out causing pump failure. If there is any plastic material on the pump shaft I would remove oil injection and pre-mix.
