Does anybody know if the alarm horn inside the shifter/control box is supposed to make a sound when the igniton is turned....then once its cranked, it turns off....if so, is this circuit operated by the "key switch" inside of the shifter/control box?.................
......and if no knowledge for this engine, is it possible(or does anybody know) for(if) other engines that have overheat alarms, do they have a similar feature with the alarm sounding when the ignition is turned, to let you know its operating?........
.....or does the alarm never come on unless its overheating..?

Thanks abunch guys...

The beep you get when you turn the ignition switch on is verifying the over-heat alarm.

c/6
Hooty

yea..but if it doesnt make a beep when you turn it on....is that normal...we shorted the circuit back at the ground wire connection coming from the engine and the horn sounded.... does this indicate that the switch or wires inside of the shifter box may be corroded....and do you think the overall alarm system is working ...

Willis....if your alarm horn has a buzzer sound to it instead of a "tone" or beep sound, it will not sound when the key is turned to on. The early alarm horns were just 12V buzzer horns.

The way to test the horn is to turn the ignition switch on & ground the brown wire. Sounds like you are OK.

I have one like he is talking about. The same year and h/p. It has no warning sound to let you know it is activated when the switch comes on.
OBJ is right on the money here.

If its the old style OMC controller, lift the fast idle lever and there may be a slot under it to insert a key or other metal object into with the ignition key in the "on" position.Buzzer should sound. Not sure what years they had that design ,but my 82' controller did.
