just got a 2001 90hp merc. steady alarm goes off after 30 mins. put in neutral 5 sec. stops.seems to be peeing fine. any suggestions?

I think I am having this same problem with my 2001 150 EFI. I just bought the boat 2 weeks ago and as soon as it happens I just shut the engine off since I am not too familiar with the boat. Within 2 minutes I start it back up and its fine. I'm thinking if it was overheating there is no way it would cool down that quick so I am kind of leaning towards a wiring or sensor issue. Tomorrow I will play around with a multimeter and the shop manual and see what I find.

a friend told me that same alarm went off and he unhooked the alarm but it ended up being low on foot oil and he had to replace foot. I"ll have to pull mine out of the water to check it

I just took mine out since having replaced the impeller (kit), poppet valve, and thermostats and it no longer sets off the alarm. The impeller and poppet didn't look terrible but it was the first time having seen them. The thermostats on the other hand were shot and basically all that was left was the gasket. I ran it at 3000-3500 for over an hour (where the problem was happening before after 5 minutes) and it worked great. Really ran like a raped ape. Hope this helps others with this issue.
