Question on your homegrown delight, the infamous GM 2.2L OHC wonder. <br /><br />My son's car recently started leaking oil prodigiously. With another circumstance to impart some professional mechanical methodology to the young one, I had him thoroughly degrease and clean the engine compartment.<br /><br />Lo and behold, after starting it up, oil is litterally spraying out, front and rear, of the cam tower cover. I think you alluded to this in a prior post.<br /><br />Now we replaced that gasket about 10k mi ago when we did the head gasket job. Incidently this is and 8 bolt cover and the leak is dead middle on both sides.<br /><br />At the time I noticed that the gasket wanted to squeeze out as you tightened the bolts. I did use a sealant but it also squeezed out leaving a big flashing of gasket and sealant. Now the protruding gasket is actually breaking off in that area and that is where it it leaking. I actually bought a second gasket because the first one squeezed out so bad.<br /><br />Any suggestions when I get yet another gasket???<br /><br />Naturally this has to crop up, along with the brake issue, a day before he leaves for college.

It's just gone lunchtime, I've had 4 cups (and about to make another)!<br /><br />Cork gasket? I'm thinking yes.<br /><br />They really don't like to be overtensioned and squeezed. This is what I do:<br /><br />Cleanout the PCV system, the big fat hose sometimes gets clogged up.<br />Soak the cork gasket in gas and ignite, enjoy the brief warmth. If you like, leave it attached to the motor .<br /><br />Buy a rubber gasket (usually from shops that carry chrome stuff and fancy tachs etc, we call them 'speed shops', dunno what you call them).<br /><br />If you can't find rubber, you need to glue the cork on so that it doesn't blowout, I use oxygen sensor safe silicon.

Thanks aldo, I'll break open a tube of the 'Right Stuff' and let it set up with minor tension on the bolts. Then I'll tighten them just a bit more.<br /><br />We do call them Speed Shops here as well. I just don't know what kinda speed shop would stoop so low to have a part for this vehicle.<br /><br />ps, I really do like your idea re soaking the gasket in gas. Maybe I'll save that for a cold winter's day.

With nice clean threads - the torque is 8 ftLbs. Need to get that glue neatly around the bolt holes also.

I think I should loctite them too. Every bolt on that pile has worked it's way to hand tight.

Aldo, I just resealed the cam cover on the 2.2. Cleaned it real good, degreased it and applied this stuff to both sides of the cork. Couldn't find a rubber gasket.<br /><br /> http://www.permatex.com/auto/autouh.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=25223 <br /><br />I got out my little torque wrench and set it for 8 lbs but stopped way short of achieving that because it would have just squeezed everything out of place again. I just snugged the bolts until I had an even squeeze out of the glue. I'll go back in the morning, after the glue has set and re-snug the bolts. I just don't think they will take 8 ft/lbs. If this stuff doesn't seal it up, I don't think anything will. I just wished I had used this on the bottom of the cam tower/box. It doesn't appear to be leaking though.

I have not seen the 'right stuff' downunder but it looks like it will do the job nicely.<br /><br />Was the PCV blocked?

If blowing thru it is a good test no, but when my son took off the cover today he said that the cork gasket, on both sides of the middle of the cover, had pulled completely inside the sealing surface. Every where else around the perimeter the gasket and sealer had squeezed to the outside. I had originally used a hi temperature silicon and it had very poor adhesive qualities.<br /><br />Now I can see the new gasket, fairly uniformly and slightly protruding, around the whole perimeter (with a nice even squeeze out of 'the right stuff').

I think (from a previous Aldo answer) it was the mighty Holden Camira!

The 2.2L belongs to a family of engines known as 'World Engine'. It is made by GM. It was/is used in many different brands (hence the 'world' reference). Holden Camira, Daewoo, Opel, Pontiac, Nissan Pulsar and a few others I can't recall.<br /><br />Downunder (including NZ), we see them mainly in Daewoo and pulsar (fortunetly, the camira is dead).<br /><br />Aldo

What is the etymology of the name HOLDEN. Did GM buy an Australian Mfgr or did they just dream up the name.<br /><br />Aside from the fact that it had GM attached to it, Holden was always a favorite name of mine due to my appreciation of William Holden. He, incidently, played an Australian character in a movie whose name escapes my recollection.

The only reference to William Holden and Australia that I can remember was in the movie 'Earthling'.<br /><br />1856, James Holden had a leather goods and saddlery business, that progressed into a carriage business. In the early 1900s' he began doing trimming work for cars - soft tops etc. he also won a contract to build sidecars for Harley Davidson. <br /><br />1905, his son, Henry, took over the business.<br /><br />1917, his company struck a deal with the largest Sydney Dodge dealership to build car bodies, the cars he built were Essexes, Studebakers, Overlands & Chevs. Up until this point, all of these makes were imported from the U.S. Their business name changed to 'Holden's Motor Body Builders'.<br /><br />1923, GM (U.S) made Holden the sole Australian body builder of the GM branded vehicles. It was a parnership, not a takeover. <br /><br />1929, Holden died. GM formed 'GM Australia'. GM didn't see the point in using Holden's company anymore to built the bodies, problems and arguments meant that production was suffering. The two companies merged in 1931. The company was to be called - GMH (General Motors Holden).<br /><br />In 1948, the first all Australia built & designed car rolled off the assembly line - ever since, they have been known as 'Holden' although their proper name is 'General Motors Holden'.<br /><br />Aldo
