Alignment Help

I have read every thread and the book about this. I have put alignment tool in boat and it only goes about an inch into the splines. What could keep the tool from going the rest of the way in? I have bumped the alignment tool back and forth and up down to try to set the bearings. I have moved the engine some and everything appears lined up. I tried to put upper unit on and it goes into splines and will turn the engine but i can not get unit to go all the way on. How much force should be applied to unit to get it to go on?

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen II with 4.3

I am about to the point of going to a dealer and have them align and put outdrive on. Is there anyone in NC that has installed this and would be willing to assist me or teach me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Alignment Help

The tool should slide in without much effort, and the only resistance on the drive should be the o-rings on the driveshaft. Was the engine out? Rear mounts assembled correctly? Coupler worn?

yes the engine was out for rebuild. The coupler looked good when I had it out.

Re: Alignment Help

Were the rear mounts replaced and did you install with all the components in the correct order.?

Re: Alignment Help

Dont even try to put the drive on until you get it aligned with the alignment tool. the coupler isn't packed with grease is it? Can cause an air lock. Stick a light in there and eyeball it to get it close and then adjust front mounts up or down to get bar in. Then fine tune an easy tool insert according to the spline marks in the grease on the tool. Download a manual from the stickys at the top of this outdrive section and it will walk you through the alignment process.
