It's very important, and no you can't eyeball the bolts... If it wasn't important Merc wouldn't have specified it be done that way... It's not just the gaskets you're aligning, it's the impeller housing and the base plate too...

Re: Alignment pins

Thanks for the reply ...when I first got the boat 2 years ago I replaced the impeller and did not use the pins...since then I have had a small drive fluid leak that has driven me crazy ...I have pressure checked it various times and it always holds pressure for days ...someone mentioned that if I hadnt used the pins it may be possible the slinger seal on the drive shaft above the pump housing may not be sealing ...is that a possibility?

No, that would allow air into the pump and cause cooling problems, not an oil leak. Where are you seeing the oil?

Re: Alignment pins

Drain the gear lube and pressure test the drive. That's how you find oil leaks.

Think he's done that....

I meant to add that he needs to turn shafts, move things that move and see if it leaks.

Gen II's are noted for leaking around the plastic shift shaft bushing and the plastic carrier under the pump. The slinger seal has nothing to do with oil leaks.

Re: Alignment pins

I am using an ounce or two after an afternoon of tubing or skiing so over the twenty five to thirty hours of use in a typical summer I use about a third to half a bottle to top up the reservoir.I did notice after sitting with the drive up on the trailer some leakage of gear oil out the weep holes where the lower unit bolts on . Thanks for all replies ...I do learn a lot on this forum...regards,Bob

You should start your own thread, but you need to drain the drive and pressure test it... .Oil leaking out can also be a place for water to get in....

Re: Alignment pins

I guess I will have to pressure test again and move the drive shaft and shift shafts to try to track this down.i have pressure checked it various times and it has held pressure of fifteen lbs for days but I never thought to wiggle things .i will try again...thanks for the replies ...and keep them coming if there are new ideas!!!
