I'm deep into replacing gimble, bellows, shift cable, etc. on my 1992 Apha One Gen II Mercruiser 5.7L (a first for me). I bought an alignment tool from a guy who told me it was for that unit. I have not removed the Gimble yet and I greased the tool and stuck it in to see how it works. It went it to about an inch past the start of the last (thickest of the 3) section and then it stops. I got it stuck and it was a B*&%$ to get out. I then tried it on the replacement gimble (which is not installed yet) and the same thing happened. I know there is an old and new version of the tool but I thought the differece was the thickness of the middle section. Did I get stuck buying the wrong tool? It seems that if it goes an inch onto the last section it should then go the rest of the way as that section seems to be a consistent thickness. There is no indentifying number on it so I assume its aftermarket. Any thoughts on what the problem could be? Its painted black. Should I sand off the paint?
