I have a 1978 Century 23' 350 engine 260 hp mercruiser. I had the engine replaced the mechanic told me there were no spring lock washers in the rear mounts so when he added these he had to raise the front of the motor over an inch. Seems to me that would put the gimbal bearing at an angle to the motor coupler. He said the motor was perfect align. Would appreciate any input.

Re: alignment

That's normal. Those springs have to be there, or the alignment will never be right. Plus with a new engine the motor mounts may have been a little off. If he put in the right parts, realigned it and it's now perfect, what's the problem?

Re: alignment

Thanks Don I just wanted to get another opinion. I was afraid raising the front that much would put it at an angle to the bearing

Re: alignment

Ok I got her home and guess what no gear lube in the out drive no big deal except he ran it at 2500 rpm for 30 minutes. hopefully he didn't put her in gear but still the gears in the top would have been turning. anyone have an opinion as to damage that would come from this

Re: alignment

Not even a question, take it apart and inspect all bearings and gears.

Re: alignment

I have the boat home and my alignment tool will go in but it is tight I thought it should go in and out with two fingers. What is the purpose of the spring lock washers are they supposed to make alignment easier somehow. It appears that the front of the motor still needs to go up.If anyone could give me some instruction as to what to do next I would sure appreciate it

Re: alignment

Alingment is the least of your worries....as Bondo and Don advised you you need to tear the drive down and see what you FUBAR'ed when it was run for 30 minutes w/o drive lube.

Re: alignment

if it was the shop or mechanics fault that the drive was run without oil i would scream blue murder and insist that it be stripped and checked for damage..

if it was my fault i would optimistically think that it was in neutral under no load.. that all the moving parts still had a liberal coating of oil left over from before the drive was drained and that with a little luck no damage was done..

trog

What is the Diagnosis on the Drive that was Run WithOut Oil,..????.......

The Spring Washers do 2 things,........

1),.... The Most Obvious,.. They're to Space the motor Up.......

2),.... They're also a part of the Continuity System,... Or Continuous Grounding of All the Metal Parts of the Drive System........

3),.... Yes,.. They Have to be there.........
