Hey guys, Im painting the starcraft, I have sanded everything once with 100 grit, and I have my etching primer for my bare spots, vinegar ready, yada yada yada. Not gonna sand with finer paper till the day of painting. I have had a gallon and a half of Blue Marine Alkyd paint enamel that I got a year ago, I'm going to use this paint for now because, well, for one, I have to use it somewhere... and two, I'm gonna keep this coat on the cost effective side. Its a duck hunting boat in the winter and the paint job takes a lickin. When the floors in it rot out and I have to tear the boat apart, I will retire it to fishing exclusively and save the expensive, pretty paint job for then.

As for now, I have sanded the old paint, which is adhered very well, but I am very curious as to what product would make a good primer over old sanded paint for my alkyd enamel? And also, how many coats of this recommended primer do I need.

Any other tips for alkyd enamel will be greatly apprciated, oh and i think im gonna spray this one

If you are painting over paint......... no primer is required. Just good prep and scuffing of the old finish. Yes, the bare spots need to be primed.

Re: Alkyd Paint, priming sanded paint

If you ask any Paint Mfg they will always advise you to use the recommended primer for the paint. The reason is the chemical properties of the primer are much more likely to bond with dissimilar coatings than will the color coat. Using the mfgs recommended primer will also aide in the chemical bonding between the primer and the final color coat. I would recommend contacting the mfg of your Alkyd paint and see what they recommend for a primer. And as always any and all Bare aluminum should be primered with Self Etching primer and then primer applied over that. There are many examples of iBoat members attempting to paint over old paint jobs and having the new paint fail. Check with the MFG is my advice.

No need for extra adhesion?

Hi Dougy,
If the paint looks like it is original factory paint it could be two part epoxy. How old is it? I think it would be a shame to put alkyd over that. If I did use it I wouldn't spray it because the mil thickness would take 3 or 4 coats to cover blemishes. Alkyd is soft and will
disapear any time you beach it. How old is it? how about some pics.

Re: Alkyd Paint, priming sanded paint

Star, I painted it a few years back, the outside of the boat was completely stripped and painted with self etching primer and the alkyd paint I'm describing now, the inside of the boat I sanded the old paint and also painted that with alkyd. My mistake was not priming in between zc and top coat.

I called this company to get some info, and I get nothing but ignored, no matter who I try to talk to... so Im thinkin of selling what I have of the alkyd and using something else, so in that case, what are some good, efffective alternative paints to paint this boat without stripping the well adhered paint? If theres something hard enough that wont scrape off like the alkyd did on my last coat, ill surely use it... as long as it sticks strong and is worth the money.ZZZ.jpg

the pics before sanding, and the color difference was something i did to see if the half gallon matched the gallon i have....obviously not

Check the link in the botttom of my signature below. You can add Hardener to your alkyd paint and make it very durable. I suspect you could use the primer I recommend in the link as well. It's for alkyd based paint and should be compatible. Lots of fellow iBoaters have been using this link and formula with great success. Pettit easy Poxy is another single stage product that you can use the hardener with. Lakelover, BigHoss (both tin boat guys) and myself (Glasser) used Pettit on our boats with the hardener with great success. If I was doing it again, I'd just use the Valspar with the hardener. But I NEVER beach my boat so not sure how it would hold up. I suspect not very many paints, hardnere or not, would hold up well to beaching. Even gelcoat won't hold up that well to beaching.

Re: Alkyd Paint, priming sanded paint

woodonglass, your boat looks absolutely phenomenal, great sewing tips....

as for the primer, I read your resto and some of lakelovers as well, and some product info on both methods. The only worry I have of the hardner is the amount of gloss it will put on my hunting boat, (Im guessing less hardner, less gloss). As for primer, I read up on Pettit Easypoxy Above Water Undercoater, 6149, which i believe lakelover used, and wonder if this is a better primer, in my situation, than the valspar..? Valspar sure doesnt put much technical info out there online..but i see pettit made this primer for painted surfaces and alkyd paint amung others

Whats your take on the two versus each other?

IMHO not much difference. I have used both as well. The next project I do will be All Valspar. It will be glossy but... sanding with 1200 grit after it has cured should knock the gloss off without damaging the finish.

I would like to put my .02 in if I may ..

Doug .. you asked about your Primer/application and end result.

For a full Paint application it is good to use the same product all the way to the end.

But you want to touch up..correct ?

There is a sticky post up there done that will give you products and advise :D . http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=457159

The thing about 'repairing' paint on alum is the prep. You MUST have proper feather adhesion on your existing paint when prepping the raw alum. If you dont chase the bad adhearing paint/primer to accept the Prime promoters ..then your already working backwards.

Some primers/promoters will 'Lift' the edge of primers/paints thus causing a lift edge ( start all over again on those prime edges ).

Your primer Must Encapsulate the substrate. Your paints have Thinners that can sometimes 'attack' the edges of the primed surface. 2 part epoxies work the best to eliminate this problem.

Your prep is Key.

YD.

getting ready to start tomorrow, possibly if the humidity decreases.... when all said and done after a completed paint job, considering i use the hardner, how long do you guys stay out of water with the boat? I've heard 30 days, is this true?
