All coal tars created the same?

Knocking off all the loose paint and rust on the bottom of my boat and putting down a few coats of coal tar in the spring.

Been looking around at coal tar epoxies, but not many specifically mention boat hulls (although if its good enough for sewage treatment, I hope it works almost anywhere). Only differences I really see in them are percentage of solids.

What would work best for a steel hulled houseboat sitting in Lake Champlain?

Thanks.

Interlux makes a bottom paint for steel..google -US PAINT and look up your choices, might as well get it soda blasted , even a small amount of rust left will slough off any covering.

As far as I can tell, interlux does not make a coal tar epoxy anymore.
I have almost 500sq.ft. of hull to paint on a boat called 'The BUB', (Big Ugly Boat). Lookin for something that gets the job done, doesn't need to be pretty, and im not worried about turning black if you rub against the stuff in the water. From what I've learned so far, coal tar is the cheap option, and is durable, and Im on a budget. :/

Boat may/may not be sand blasted in the spring before the new stuff goes on. Depends, again, on what I can afford. Hopefully I get my OT back this winter...

It will be sanded to knock the crud off, and rough up any remaining paint that still sticks.

About 6 years ago, when i was looking for an inexpensive method of protecting my 80' dredge barge from bottom growth, an old naval base maintaince employee (Charleston sc) told me about sub paint, the naval yards kept 55 gallon drums of the stuff laying around..applied 3 coats of the stuff, lasted 4 years. see if any of the older marinas in your area have access to the stuff. As for coal tar goop..what about creasoat? (sp)

I'll have to ask around... I like the sub paint idea. I've tried looking for surplus 'battleship gray' paint to do everything above water, but not much luck online... Im sure all of this is out there somewhere.. its been done before.

creosote = coal tar? seems similar enough... I'll look into that too. Thanks.
