Can I safely connect the two main terminals on my solenoid to crank the motor like you do a car or is this a bad Idea?

No, that's a good idea. Use a jumper cable and watch the sparks though. (They shouldn't be that bad, just don't have puddles of gasoline around - and careful not to bump the little terminals)

Welp I jumped the two main contacts on the solenoid and the motor turned over, so I know now for sure it is bad, but, the motor did not crank. I know that the fuel system is good cause I just rebuilt it by the book. It backfired twice. Today I'm not sure what to think. I've just got to keep on trying/learning.

I don't know anything about your merc, but backfiring (throught the exhaust) usually indicates very bad timing. Are you absolutely postive sure you have the wires on the right spark plugs?

Did it backfire like a car would do(Boom), or did it just sneeze??

I'm certain the plug wires are correct and yes it backfired like a car.

Could be the flywheel key has sheared off and threw off the timing.

I have, more than once tried to start the engine by jumping the solenoid with similar results.After lot of frustration '(It's been starting good)' I happened to notice: I forgot to turn tthe key on!

My key is on I make real sure of that. I've started a new thread since the problem of this thread is over. Thanks to all who helped with this one and now...........
