All wired up but no go

I wired up my boat tonight according to the advice in my earlier posts but there was no crank, my lights worked but it wouldn't crank, didn't even hear a click. Could this be a bad selenoid? The selenoid was submerged a few times for a few hours. Should I get a new slelnoid to try?

I don't have your other post (s) right here.

Submerged for a few times for several hours doesn't sound great . What else was submerged ?

Yes, it could be a defective solenoid, but test it first.

Using a jumper wire, jump from Battery side of solenoid to small ignition terminal on solenoid. Solenoid coil should close and starter should turn. This assumes solenoid is internally grounded OR down stream connection on ground terminal from solenoid is grounded. If solenoid fails to operate, it's bad. If solenoid clicks but starter does not spin, either solenoid contacts are bad or you have a starter problem. If the above test are OK, problem points to ignition circuit at console.

Find the small wire connection from the ignition switch (on the solenoid). Place either a DC volt meter or test lamp from this terminal to ground and turn key to Start position. If you don't have voltage at the terminal , look back towards the ignition switch for open wire.

Did you move that one yellow wire to ground.
Sure makes it easier to remember wire colors and other facts if you stick to one thread instead of starting a new one.

the one side of selenoid the yellow wire goes to the motor and the other to the ignition

Just that wiring box that the selenoid is in. due to the short transom in my boat if I put it nose first on shore the waves come over the transom and fill up the boat. the only thing in the boat at the time was the wiring box. so it's all that was submerged.

The yellow wire that goes to the motor must be grounded. Put a volt meter on the other terminal with the yellow wire from the starter switch and see what you get when you turn the key

one nuther possibility...neutral start switch in the control box...should be in the solenoid input circuit ("S" terminal to switch to soleniod), should have continuity with shifter in neutral.

Assume the "lights" you speak of are wired through the control box therefore you have 12V therefore the main fuse on the engine is intact.

Your drawing confuses me...my solenoid is on the engine side of the big plug...

Could a short on the motor side cause damage to the solenoid? I remembered last time I was out with the 28hp on the boat the wires shorted and the motor stopped and wouldn't crank again. I had to use the trolling motor to get back home.

"wiring box that the solenoid is in"? remind us again...what year and HP is your outboard?

when you say "wires shorted"...might be helpful to know...exactly what happened?

motor won't start:
1. emergency kill switch in "run" position?
2. fuel line pressurized?
3. see if you have spark - pull a spark plug and hold it against the cylinder head while somebody engages the starter - this test doesn't indicate the "quality" of spark, just existence - good enough for now.
4. have spark? put some premixed fuel/oil in a spray bottle, spray it into your carb throats and try again.
