I was admiring this guy's "fishing boat" who was heading out for some bass fishing, it was a yellow and black 20' Allison with a 2.5 Mercury 350HP Drag Motor...he said it would run the 1/4 mile at 103MPH and top speed of 111MPH!...but mostly "he just enjoyed a peaceful day's fishing"...used his trolling motor a good bit since his hot Mercury was a bit loud!....Do I NEED a boat like that?...probably not...Maybe trouble convincing the boss-lady it was "just a fishing boat";)

Well, I guess it would be fun but you wouldn't catch me doing 100+mph in a bass boat. I bet the engine is loud, and that thing must look like a buoy in the water at idle with that much weight hanging off of the back end. You wouldn't think a drag motor would last very long under normal use. To each their own. If I'm doing triple digits, I'm in something with a little more freeboard than a bass rocket!

Yep, this was a real nice young fellow, seemed to have plenty of money$$$...The motor had a rather short, pointed looking lower unit with an strange looking stainless prop with very sharp edges on it!...Said boat had a 30 gallon tank, so you wouldn't get far with a rig like that!

Probably something like a SportMaster lower gearcase that Mercury Racing produces as well as a Cleaver-style prop. I bet she looked fast just floating around, lol.

Robert: Very few people can afford a Ferrari or Lamborghini, however they're still looking for the ultimate adrenalin rush.

But, almost every redneck with a job and good credit rating can get into a used Allison bassboat with a Mercury Racing engine. 100 mph on water is equal to 200 mph on land. The difference is that a Ferrari will go around a corner--and stop.

There are many boat hulls capable of 80 mph or more on smooth water, but very few very fast boats are stable, safe rides. They're more of a moment of terror.

If you want to see terror, go on UTube and enter tunnel hull boats. At fast speeds, they're literally flying, and a gust of wind will make'em fly--the front end and rear end swap ends. But until that happens, they're incredible thrills.

Yup, they run the Chouteau drag races near Tulsa, OK every year, and there has been a person killed two of the past three years. Those tunnel hull boats run over 200mph in the 1/4 mile and are absolutely insane to watch. Of course they're doing it with 4K HP drag racing motors, but it's still probably the most dangerous sport on the water. I'd feel safer going 80mph on a jet ski than I would in those things!

Several Allisons with the big OB's ply (or fly) the upper Alabama River. Sphincter tightening moment just watching. I politely decline the invitations to go for a ride.

If it's too loud & fast your probally too old...If you can run 100+mph in any boat I'm impressed.
Then again a lot of folks love thier 24ft pontoons with a 90hp O/B. too each his own.

Those Merc outboards don't weigh enough to throw off the balance at rest. Their speed & power are from high tech, high revs, high compression, high prop shafts, and high propeller pitch.
I think I'd like to be able to run so fast I have to be careful. Sounds like fun to me.

Merc racing 300 optimax is over 500 pounds... Thats a pretty serious chunk of metal hanging on the transom!
