Hi All...

Locally here a guy has a 1995 Allison Bass Boat up for sale. It has the Merc 280 HP 2.5 Race Mariner Motor. He states in his ad that it is a 100+MPH boat. He wants 15k obo.

I'm trying to decide if I should call him and go have a look at it.

Anyone here own one? What's it like to go 100 on a Bass boat?

Sheesh......]

Any and all comments on that Allison line and the durability of a motor designed for that kind of performance would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading, Chuck

hmmm....

What do you mean? You have a boat that goes even faster? Or...do you mean that you don't care for Allison boats?

The former I bet... :)

[color=lt blue]I haven't been over a 100, but I did ride in one with a total of 3 people on board, the boat still ran 96 with our three big arses in it. This boat would run 107 in 1/4 mile and had been clocked on radar at 112 before.

Awsome ride. :)

Allison's are all about speed. If you feel as if you need that much to compete or to play then give it careful consideration. That is helmet and full vest speed. Allison's have always had a good reputation but you are looking at a 11 year old rig. I would be cautious with a "race" motor. Race=higher repair costs etc.

I would have the engine checked real well.
Have a comp test done and see what you have.
These race engines are tough and meant to run on premium fuel.
I have a Gambler that will run real close to 80.
There is suppose to be a Gambler at the factory set up with the 250X that will know on the 3 digit door.
I don't like going fast, the Gambler is just a fantastic fishing platform, the ProMax is just a plus.

One other thing, you best know what you are doing behind the wheel.
These boats are nothing like the Rangers, Tritons etc.

just my opinion, but if you want to get into that type of boating, go buy yourself a fountain, formula, donzi, sonic, cigarette, outerlimits, etc...... of course, the $15K will simply cover the cost of drives for the season.

it's a dangerous sport. just yesterday i was running my FIL's 27' jupiter w/ twin 200's. this is a custom, performance center console that costs $140K+ new and for good reason.... it's engineered and made to do what it does. i was running 50 mph in 2' chop with boat wakes mixed in. sure, it's fun, but i couldn't imagine getting in a small bass boat and doing twice that speed.

Great engine ... but they need alot more service than the ordinary outboard, and also very expensive to maintain ... the speed is awesome and loads of fun ... but if you decide to go for it .... up your life insurance ...

thanks for the input.

No way would I ever go 100 either. But knowing that it could would be nice.

At the price (if it's in good condition) it would be a lot of fun for the money.

I haven't called to check it out yet. I probably won't.....it's just tempting is all... :)

Raced 14 foot (think, can't remember) Allison's in the 70's with the 70hp Stingers and Merc's........just to much fun ! Nothing wrong about going fast on water...just where, and know what you are doing, and how the boat handles. I could never have TOO much HP on the transom!8)

Built for comfort, the boat is around you, not under you.
The way most hi-end bass boats are made.

You should look at how you plan on using the boat. That is a serious boat, and if you are looking to just cruise from spot to spot, 15 large can get you a more user-friendly boat. You don't cruise these boats, you are at 100% concentration, both hands on the wheel, looking well ahead for water issues that could upset the handling and make you wet or dead. You have to spend a lot of time in the seat learning how to use the jackplate and the trim to keep it on the pad and not have it chinewalk out from under you. There are a lot of boats out there that will be less expensive to maintain, easier to drive, and still provide a good fishing platform. I love the hardcore bass rigs but would never own one because I like to go from point A to point B and enjoy the scenery. You are not doing that in this boat, and it is a waste to not run this boat at its potential. Bragging rights are cool, but you best tame the beast if you are buying it for bragging rights.
