This is my first post on here and this sight was referred to me from some guys on the Ohio Game Fishing forum that found great help with boat projects.

I bought this year a 2001 StarCraft 196 that had black bottom paint on it.The old owner put it on when he bought it new and now it looks like crap, chipped, cracking etc.The old owner put it on because some one said he needed it even though it was never left in the water.Well I want to strip it off and primer and repaint it or just leave it bare Alm.
SO WHAT SHOULD I USE TO GET THE OLD PAINT OFF?

-I heard I should not use the car paint stripper because it would hurt the rivets and seals.
-heard sanding would tear the Alm up to much
-heard soda blasting has a chemical in it that would hurt the Alm

Did hear that I should have it walnut blasted, then prime with the special Alm primer and repaint using a good car paint.

I would use some oven cleaner and a scraper to get the paint off and then wash it down real good with hot soapy water to remove any residue.Best to do this in hot weather . The metal then should be primed and painted. Leaving it bare metal may look bad without it being sealed.

You mat be surprised how much will come off with a pressure washer if it is ablative paint. If it is not, any marine paint stripper will work, or, you could try CtriStrip stipper from the home center.

Are you sure we are talking about paint and not something else? It might be Gluvit sealer.

I know how :)..

but first..how do plan on collecting the Bottom paint ? ...

down the sink is not legal m8..down the car wash I dont know if its legal..but its still not cool..down your storm drains outside your driveway is not legal ( if it is in your location..it shouldnt be ).

You should be asking how to safely remove BP IMO..

Just me though...

Another reason why I like strippers. You can collect everything. I then bring it to work and they dispose of it for me the correct way at our body shop. You may have a BS close by that will do it for you, free. Or I think some of the chain auto parts stores will do it for you.

I know our truck wash is regulated. All of our waste water is collected in a seep here in the property. And we have to submit to inspections from time to time. I assume public car washes are regulated the same way. Some car washes post specific things you cannot wash.

Im only suggesting that one be safe .. Im not assuming that just because a sign tells you what is acceptible..

If there was a sign on our washes that said " No Boats Allowed " is still just a sign..and some dont read much now a days ;) .

Just be cool about where your spilling your waste products is all Im saying....I really dont want our next door scraping..sanding..washing there bottoms down our street.....Nasty stuff man..

Welcome to iboats

Soda blasting will work w/o harm...... so will walnut shells..... some have even sand blasted as long as a light touch is used.....

When it is all said and done most people who are going to re-paint use an orbital sander...... just be careful and not too aggressive by the rivets

The only Alum I know of that specifically says NOT to soda blast is Volvo drives. Dont know why. You should be fine with the soda blast.

I just got done striping some Alm with Tal-Strip ll by Mar-hyde.
I got it from Finish Master Auto paint supplier.
It is made for striping paint from planes. Will not harm alm.
